"Well, today Alexander Arms announced a few things at the Big 3 writers event.
The Grendel has been accepted by SAAMI
They have released their trademark on the 6.5mm Grendel
They showed off steel cased Grendel produced by Wolf
They hired a very well respected gentleman named Wayne Holt to handle PR.
So, now ANYONE can make a 6.5mm Grendel.
The steel cased ammo is being produced by Barnaul for Wolf Performance ARMS and Ammunition.
Note Wolf now has a firearms division and is working with Izhmash and Molot. They are looking into
Vepr and Saiga rifles in 6.5mm Grendel. Currently testing is being done on the Wolf steel cases to verify
they are good to go. Wolf is claiming production ammo for 1st quarter of this coming year. They said
now that they switched this from Tula to Barnaul things are progressing nicely. I think its very positive
as Barnaul’s quality is well known for being a notch above Tulas. The steel cases look sexy…
Wayne Holt was the #2 man at Hornady for many years and was with Glock prior to this.
This is big move on Alexander Arms part. Should be very interesting to see how things go. He’s very
well liked and respected in the industry.
Wolf was at the event and they are very firmly behind the Grendel, and have some very interesting
things regarding AK rifles.
I’m tired, will try to get some pics up in a couple days. Day two of the event is tomorrow…
The Military Arms Channel folks are out here, great guys. Had a really good time speaking
with them and seeing how they do stuff. Lot of interesting products and Hi-Lux showed a
prototype of a new CMR type scope…many interesting things here…even had one of the early
developers of the 6.8 SPC!"
I’d personally say yes about being more ideal for longer barrels. I just think its cool to have another standardized option. Cool that Lapua and Hornady make brass. Cool that there will be cheap wolf steel case available. I like that it can be formed out of 7.62x39 (which is probably why wolf picked this up… less tooling).
Comparison to 6.8 has been done to death… pick your preference. Not comparable to 300blk with its own advantages. I don’t have a 6.5G at the moment… proprietary bolt and mags will keep me on the fence for a while.
Hot damn! I have parts stored up for three Grendel builds, but never got around to them partly because ammo was so hard to come by. Hopefully, this will now change.
Best? Hmm … target shooters like the longer barrels but, the SBR’s work really well too. The difference with a 6.8SPC to me seem like the reverse situation: using a ~14.5 inch barreled upper at intermediate to long range. The 6.5G seems to perform similarly at CQB distances in a short barrel but, appears to out perform the 6.8SPC in the same configuration at longer ranges.
300 AAC Blackout? Totally different application. Sure it can be used at CQB and long range distances but, that’s not what it was designed for. Short barreled and suppressed are where the sweet spot for this round is. If I’m going to hunt deer, this is not the caliber I would take to the field. Suppressed for ferral hogs … sure! Fun on range days … sure. Other specialized uses … sure.
Grendel works well from most barrel lengths and while like any other cartridges there is a benifit to longer barrels at longer ranges it is not confined in performance to long tubes. Work has shown that it performs exceptionally well from typical carbine barrels and retains the ability to engage at longer ranges out to 800m even from 14.5" sytems.
The cartridge is fully compatible with the weapon system and provides greater durability than the existing M4. There is no advantage in pushing the performance envelope beyond the existing levels as the recoil generated from increased velocities and pressures is not compatible with the weight of the parent gun and control of the weapon in CQC suffers.
Intermediate calibers are a fine balancing act. Durability and control must be set against close range and long range performance.
Superior to the Creed? Totally unrelated cartridge and not in the same power band as the Creed. Apples and oranges. But they are both good, if not great as 6.5mm.
6.5 Grendel and 6.5 Creedmore are in completely different classes, jav. Gendel is an intermediate-power round, and Creedmore is full-power, and has to be used in the heavier AR10 rifles.
No. Creedmore has a larger case. It will outperfrom the Grendel at range, but the Creedmore is an AR-10 proposition while the Grendel is an AR-15 proposition. Two different classes of cartridges.
I think you will see this round die most of the rifle compaies are already droping it. like ruger for instance.
I want an MRP barrel. I have contacted SSK and the other guy I forgot there name and they all keep saying ya we can do it then I never hear from them again
Makes me glad I have my 3 builds complete and broken in, two are gas piston, one a 16"midie, the other a 14" heavy rifle. The DI unit is an Alexander Arms Overwatch. I had managed to put in a good stock of brass, Lapua and Hornandy over the last 3 years so am good to go there
Crenshaw Ammunition <info@crenshawammo.com> has Lapua 123 gr Sencar on sale for 299 and change per thousand, with $1.00 for shipping so I have a thousand on the way.
