So I just ordered a 6.5 Creed, which is being built atm. I have been surfing around a bit and was wondering if anyone here was still shooting one ? A vast majority of the posts that I have found are a bit old. I was curious about the Hornady vs Winchester ammo(Hornady brass?), which I have not found much to say on the win ammo. It does seem there was a bad run with the Hornady stuff on a few lots, and of course the loose primer issue on re-loadings. Has Hornady brass gotten better ? or should I think about spending the extra money on getting the Nosler brass to work up a few loads ?
From what I have read, these are laser beams for the most part. Factory ammo is pretty good, but I am wanting to work up a hunting load for this year.
Hornady is okay nowadays. It’s far better than Winchester, but both are distant second and third, respectively, from Nosler or Norma if you can find them.
I get about 5-7 reloads from Hornady and then primers start getting appreciably loose. If new, I expand the Hornady necks first and then use a full length die with neck bushings to get it into spec. I’m on 10 and counting with Nosler, FWIW, and it’s holding up well. The Win brass I’ve had was so crappy I chucked it (huge variation in neck thickness, thin brass, and large variations in wt.). In fact, I’m so unimpressed with Winchester rifle brass lately that I completely avoid it.
Warg, what bullets are you using for reloading ? I just bought some 130 bergers and 2 lbs of 4350 to work up a load to hunt with. I have about 1 week until I go hunting to get it all worked out.
I also bought a box of the Nosler’s just in case I do not get time. I’m still choking on the price of them though.
Sorry for the belated reply. I travel 3+ days per week for work.
I’ve used 130 Bergers in a Bartlein 1:8 twist 26" and they’re awesome. I’ve been loading these with N550 now that I’m very low on Varget.
With 4350 the rec range from Berger is 37.5 gr- 41.7, but I have not used that powder (though I have some I might try).
My nephew tagged a huge Ram two months ago at 320y using factory Hornady 129 InterBond. That ammo was pretty darn accurate, but had quite a bit a higher MV that what we could produce using 130 Bergers with N550, FWIW. For hunting you might want to snag some factory ammo given your short time window.
