5x + magnifier

I purchased my first AR (armalite AR10A4) about 2 months ago and am addicted to all the options of customizing it. So far I have installed YHM low pro gas block, Samson 10 13.2 rail and Aimpoint Pro. I am now looking for a magnifier but don’t think a 3x is enough in what I’m looking for. Does anyone have any experience in the higher powered magnifiers? Input?

Thanks in advance.

Sell the Aimpoint, and save the money you would use for the magnifier and get a good 1-4x or 1-6x scope.

Shoot the Aimpoint without the magnifier to see if you even need a magnifier.

My personal opinion is that if you need a magnifier, you should get a variable scope instead. If you’re going to mostly run the Aimpoint unmagnified, that means the magnifier is either removed or flipped to the side. If it’s removed, it’s either stored in a pocket or left at home. If it’s flipped to the side, that means you’ve got something flopping around and adding weight to the rifle for little to no gain.

If you’re going to run the Aimpoint magnified most of the time, save yourself weight & money and get a variable scope

This is my first AR and it is definitely a trial and error for me. I did a lot of research before purchasing the Aimpoint. I was torn between it and a variable zoom. Most of my shooting will be between 75-150 yds and sometimes reaching out to 300-400 yds. I will be purchasing a variable zoom scope but in the mean time $200 or so is much more affordable than $1000+ scope.

ETA - My initial post was poorly worded, sorry. Hits can be made with just an Aimpoint out to those distances, assuming your vision is capable and the target area is large enough. For hunting though, magnification does make sense. I still would only buy an Aimpoint or EOTech magnifier, but that is me. I have heard good things about the Primary Arms versions, as others have said.

Magnifiers are clumsy on the run but can make your AP more enjoyable from a bench or hunting blind. There are times times I don’t want to lug 1x6 around and wish I could just pocket the magnifier.

That is my reasoning… I will be using this for hunting and not sure I would want to chance a 300yd shot with no magnification.

Go out and get one, then you will know how you like it. I use a cheap primary arms x3 mag. It does all I need and doesn’t piss me off that I dropped $600 on it when it’s not sitting in front of my AP.

From the reviews I have read primary arms make some good stuff. Thanks

I have the Primary Arms 3x LER. It’s cheaper. Mounted on my Sig 716 with no problems. It’s plenty of magnification.
If you want more, you could go with 1-4x scope.

This. Due to vision issues or personal tastes some people prefer magnified optics. I am one of them. A 1X4 or 1X6 scope would be a better choice than a 5X magnifier. IMHO.

You have got to be kidding. Without knowing his vision, or what he is doing, or why he wants magnification, how can you possibly make a comment like that? You are better than that, I think you were looking at things from your own point of view and context with this one.

I definitely was, thanks for the perspective Stick.

I have a 3x on Aimpoint Twist-off Mount. keeps the weight off the gun until I need it and I like using it as a monocular in the meantime. it’s not hard to mount/dismount but you won’t be doing any Call of Duty type toggling back and forth…

Is the weight that noticeable?

I have never used a magnifier, but as I get older I have began to notice them. I have a couple of long barrel/scoped AR’s for distances beyond vision limitations. I have been on the fence about the magnifiers for about a year now. If you get one, let me know how you like it and the weight it adds.

Will do! Pulling the trigger this weekend.

A PRO and magnifier for 300 yard hunting??? Your kidding right?? Have you shot the rifle with the PRO. Why would you put an RDS on a 308? Shoot a 100 yard group and post picture. If you are good you may get a 3 inch group using an improvised rest. Multiply that times 4 in real world conditions at 300 yards. You need a scope! GH

The Pro has roughly 2" dot at 100 yards and so on. I am curious how it will work at longer ranges.
