'58 in the snow......

If I were in the market for a 7.62x39 rifle the VZ58 would be the top of a very short list.

Is there any easy way to mount an Aimpoint to this rifle?

As of right now, none that I know of.

There are some polymer rails that take the place of the gas tube cover, kind of like an Ultimak, but they’re polymer, and I don’t trust them to hold zero.

Hopefully someone will make a high quality rail set up like the Ultimak for the vz-58.

I swear I saw one with one on it Templar. It may have been a Czech trooper carrying it.

Yup, and they’re mounting them on polymer rails.

PRI makes a mount that’s sort of like an ultimak. Doesn’t look like co-witness is possible though. http://www.pri-mounts.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PRI&Product_Code=02-VZ58a&Category_Code=BASES

Looks Great Tim, how much snow did you get?

“Only” about 10". Guys to the north of us up in the DC/Winchester area got hammered.

I like it, they look right at home in the snow don’t they…

I’ve often wondered since I have never shot one, how does accuracy compare to a Kalashnikov varient? Picked one up at a fun show recently and I was surprised how light they were. Makes me wonder what the muzzle rise is like? Only thing I didn’t really like was that the PG felt a little akward to me, I found it to be very short as I had a small portion of my palm hanging off the end of the grip. The angle was strange to me as well.

Their beautiful rifles, Templar.

Moose, I’d say that the vz-58’s may have an edge in the accuracy department over the AK. It uses a short piston tappet system, similar to a FN FAL or SKS, and the dropping block operation, similar in concept to the Walther P-38 or Beretta M9, makes for an extremely smooth operating piece.

Mine has a muzzle brake that is permanently attached to bring it up to legal length, and the muzzle rise is not objectionable at all. Very smooth shooters.

I’ve taken it to a couple Vickers Tactical classes and it’s performed admirably. I let other shooters try a few mags through it to see the differences, and all came away with a smile on their face.

One of our mods here, John_Wayne777 was making hits on a reduced “C” zone steel plate at 190 yards off hand with iron sights, having never picked one up before. Part of that is the whole “It’s not the bow so much as the Indian using it”, but it doesn’t hurt to have a good bow either.

Man that second pic just looks right, there’s no other word for it.

Not a fan of the B&W treatment, I think the mild splash of color from the stock makes for a much more interesting composite.

Thanks for the information…sounds like they shoot circles around their AK cousins.

Well, I don’t know if I’d go that far, I’ve seen some pretty accurate AK’s.

BUT, comparing a stock 7.62x39mm AKM and a stock vz-58, I’d give the edge in accuracy to the vz with the same shooter behind it.

Augusta County (where I live) supposedly got the most. It was 31" in the front yard Saturday evening.

There is a company in Canada, Northeastern Arms, which makes an aluminum picatinny railed handguard set for these…I have not used one yet but I am getting one in January, I will give it a review.

They mount optics much lower than the FAB polymer guards, which is what I am currently using.

VZ58 pattern rifles are popular in Canada so there is a whole industry that has gotten rolling supplying parts and bits for them.

It may be that Canada turns in to a good source of VZ58 accessories, in fact.

Another company to check out…Rauch Tactical. They make AR stock adaptors for the VZ that are height-adjustable and offset the receiver angle so the stock is in line rather than angled down.

Finally Infratek makes an aluminum handguard set similar to the NEA one, but it has been on the market longer. I believe the Infratek requires the set in order to work, whereas the NEA handguards can be used separately if desired.

Oh, I guess there is also the unobtanium Bruger and Thornet quad rail…they are hard to track down up here and expensive to boot.

I have also seen scout mount options but they take the place of the rear sight, and I can’t get in to that.

The NEA rail allows lower 1/3 cowitness with H1/T1 and other Aimpoints, and Burris Fastfires, as well as lots of other red dots. I believe an Eotech would not cowitness but have not tried it personally. I will let you know in January, because I will probably throw my 551 on the NEA upper handguard.

I have a VZ58 set up with a T1 mounted on a B&T rail. It is rock solid. This rifle is rapidly becoming my favorite rifle. Period.

yeah, that B&T rail is pretty hot.
