Does it exist? Does anyone have a gun that can/will shoot bulk 55gr around MOA? My SPR build shooting around MOA all day with my generic 55gr z max loads but as soon as I shoot any type of bulk ammo it opens up to around 3-4 MOA. Main purpose of the ammo is going to be shooting steel at longish ranges (4-600) yards. Thankyou.
Honestly pretty much the vast majority of the 55gr bulk is limited to the 2-3 MOA range.
If you are doing longer range you might just want to invest in better ammunition. I’ve had very good luck with Prvi 75gr and at $9-$10 per box I think it is one of the best values in terms of accurate ammunition that is affordable.
Thankyou for the responses everybody. It seems I’m going to want a heavier grain bullet for my longer range shooting? I was trying to stay in the same weight as my Varmint hunting bullets for consistency sake but I can change things up if I have too. Is there a higher grain/quality bulk loading out there for a decent price? I’m limited too handloading on a single stage press so I try to just purchase my plinking ammo.
“Bulk ammo”, “decent price” and “4-600 yd. steel” in the same sentence are a tall order.
I shoot a bit of 62 gr. FMJ CBC that is “reasonably priced” (which in itself is subjective). It has proven a decent performer to 400 yds. on steel, but sure as heck isn’t MOA at that distance.
To me, shooting ‘bulk’ ammo is like shooting a 22LR rimfire. The BEST thing you can do is take it to the range with 6 to 8 brands of ammo … and see what the barrel likes!
One of my White Oak uppers loves cheap Tula, not that I shoot it a lot through it and not at all now, since I precision reload 69-grns for the across the course load for that particular upper.
Haven’t shot them past 200Y, but when ‘matched’ to a barrel it likes, bulk ammo can shoot WAY better than 2-3 MOA, I’d say more like a solid 1-1/2 MOA and not even reaching 2 (at least by my experience, ammo & uppers out to 200Y). Heck, even lowly bulk Brown Bear -39mm ammo shoots no > 2 MOA at 200Y out of my HBAR, adj gas blocked -39mm upper.
Here’s a 10rd group with BHA 55 FMJ reman, ~1.7" from my LT Stealth. I’ve shot some more of this from the same gun to 600yds and it stayed on 12x20 steel without a problem. It’s running out of gas at that distance, but it should stay on smaller plates and/or stretch a little farther.
Reman 55 JSP did about as well but I don’t recall the details. Also consider trying the 60 V-Max and 68 OTM, both of which are available in reman as well. These options will be more expensive than bulk .223, but you’ll get a lot more out of them than many others.
Try Hornady American Gunner 55gr HP. Comes in 247 round ammo can for around $125.00+/-.
It shoots fairly well for me out of acouple of my AR 15’s. I was doing 1.5 MOA in my SBR with it, 100 yards is as far as I have shot it, but 400 yards is within it’s realm, up to 600 would probably be OK, but that would also depend on if it’s accurate out of said rifle, and shooters skill is up to it’s task.
So, look for Hornady American Gunner 55gr HP, give it a shot.
Well I just put an order into Sportmans warehouse (only place I could find for free shipping on a small order). I ordered the most “budget” 223 higher weight loads I could find to test and yes most are steel case. I’ll test them out on the 100 yard and 250 yard lines to see how they perform.
Yes gun will be my “SPR” Build that has proven to float around 1-1.25" with my 55 Z-Max reloads. It may be too much to ask but I’m hoping to find a budget load that will stay under 3-4" at 250yards. I’ll post up results next week.
you know the MEN ammo is pretty good bulk stuff. Mark and I shot a few boxes, and many other folks as well. I shoot a lot of their 9mm and consider it top of line for bulk ammo.
