52 Shot, 8 Dead in Chicago over the weekend.

I debated giving this it’s own thread but I’m sure it’ll get lost or buried in the McDonald VS Chicago thread so here it is. http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/52-shot-8-dead-and-mayor-daley-still-resists-self-defense-96832609.html

Fifty-two people shot, eight of them fatally in a single Chicago weekend, yet Mayor Richard Daley appears poised to go down screaming in his opposition to the Second Amendment Foundation’s lawsuit to overturn his city’s handgun ban.

The U.S. Supreme Court could rule any day on the case of McDonald v. City of Chicago, filed by SAF, the Illinois State Rifle Association and four Chicago residents. That ruling will likely strike down the handgun ban, thus opening the door to legal self-defense by Windy City residents.

“Chicago has become a slaughterhouse,” said SAF Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb, "where defenseless victims are terrorized by armed thugs who have taken full advantage of an unarmed populace. Daley and his predecessors who perpetuated this ban are wading knee-deep in the blood of hundreds of crime victims who should have had the means to defend themselves.

“Year after year the statistics have piled up,” he continued, "yet Mayor Daley has stubbornly defended the city’s ban. While he has luxuriated at his vacation home with the safety of armed bodyguards, the bodies of Chicago crime victims have stacked up like cordwood.

“Within days,” Gottlieb observed, "we should have a ruling from the Supreme Court that puts an end to this insanity, and gives the citizens of Chicago back their right to defend themselves. Daley thinks his constituents should be content to call 911 and wait for help to arrive while they’re being shot, stabbed, raped, robbed or beaten. Those crimes happen fast, and when seconds count, Chicago police are minutes away.

“We took Daley to court because we trust his citizens more than he does with their self-defense rights,” Gottlieb concluded. “Chicago residents have endured the terror of public disarmament for almost three decades, and all they have to show for it is a body count. Mayor Daley should be ashamed.”

The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nation’s oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, the Foundation has grown to more than 650,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control.

This article claims 10 were killed. Either way this shit’s out of hand. Google: 52 shot 8 dead chicago weekend and you’ll get plenty of news articles about the happenings. http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/2415428,weekend-shooting-roundup-062110.article

Ten people were killed and at least 44 others were shot across the city Friday night into early Monday, including a baby girl who suffered a graze wound to the neck when gunfire erupted at a Near West Side barbecue.

The latest victims were found naked, shot to death and lying face down on railroad property near West 91st Street and South Holland Road on the South Side about 8:50 a.m Monday, according to a Calumet Area sergeant. Both were shot at some point Sunday night.

The victims, black males believed to be between 16 and 20, remained unidentified as of late Monday afternoon.

On Monday, a 28-year-old man was found shot in the chest about 3 a.m. in the 7500 block of South Halsted Street near a South Side church, according to Gresham District police. A passing motorist found the man, identified as Credale Woulard of the 7700 block of South Ada Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. He was dressed in women’s clothing and was found lying dead on the sidewalk.

In the South Side Englewood neighborhood, 44-year-old Darryl Dunn was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in the 7200 block of South Marshfield Avenue at 2:02 a.m. Monday, authorities said.

About 1:52 a.m. Monday, 25-year-old Larry Johnson, of the 14000 block of Park Avenue in Lansing, was shot in the 6400 block of South Ingleside Avenue in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood. He died nearly two hours later at a hospital, police said.

Durwin Hackman, 20, of the 3100 block of West 172nd Street in Hazel Crest, was killed in a shooting that also injured two others about 11:10 p.m. in the 700 block of West 111th Street in the Far South Side Roseland neighborhood. The three victims were involved in a verbal altercation over a female when other males began to shoot before fleeing the scene.

Three men, two related, were found fatally shot in the West Side’s Lawndale neighborhood early Saturday in what police consider gang-related slayings. The victims were 25-year-old Waseem Smith, 45-year-old Barry Smith and 28-year-old Leon Smith, according to the medical examiner’s office. They were shot just after 3 a.m. in the 2300 block of South Springfield, police said. Police found two of the men in separate cars and the third lying on the street outside one of the cars.

A 19-year-old man died Sunday night after being shot in the head Friday night in the 1800 block of West 87th Street, police said. Pierre York, of the 8600 block of South Wood Street, was walking down the street with a friend when they were confronted by a gunman, who fled after shooting York, police said.

In addition to the homicides, at least 10 people were shot early Monday, including a baby girl and four men who were injured when gunfire erupted during an outside barbecue on the Near West Side early Monday.

The shooting happened at 12:11 a.m. in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street, according to a Monroe District police lieutenant. Several people attending the barbecue heard shots fired and “everybody started running,” the lieutenant said.

One shot struck a 1-year-old girl, who suffered a graze wound to the neck. Four men were also shot, police said. One of the victims, a 34-year-old man, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The other three men suffered injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

On Sunday, at least 11 people were injured in shootings, including a 16-year-old girl who was critically wounded when shots rang out during a fight on a South Side street.

The girl was standing outside in the 1200 block of East 78th Street at 8:15 p.m. when several fights broke out and one person pulled out a handgun, according to a South Chicago District police captain. The girl was struck in the back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.

On an especially violent Saturday, at least 22 people were injured. That included five people hurt in four shootings in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood, just blocks from the annual Puerto Rican festival.

And following Friday’s violent storms, at least one person was injured in a shooting on the South Side.

This is just way out of control.

It’s not a gun control problem. It’s a social problem where gang violence is basically being subsidized with tax payer money.

I may rethink our family trip into Chicago this summer.

I have high hopes for the Supreme Court to give the good people of Chicago at least a litle bit of security through a favorable McDonald decision.

Gangs involved in bulk of weekend Chicago shootings
June 20, 2010 8:24 PM | No Comments
More than half of the 18 shootings over a 24-hour period this weekend involved gangs, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis said today.

Four of the seven incidents took place on the West Side. Three shootings, in which four people were injured, were near Saturday’s Puerto Rican Day festival, Weis said.

The activity started about 3 a.m., when what appeared to be a gang-related shooting left three men dead in Little Village.

That evening, five people were injured during a drive-by shooting over “narcotic sales and turf,” Weis said. The shooting took place in the 2200 block of South Kolin Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday. Three people were taken in serious-to-critical condition to nearby hospitals, department spokesman Richard Rosado said.

About 10 minutes later in Humboldt Park, blocks from where the Puerto Rican Day festival was taking place, two men were shot in the 2700 block of West Division Street, police said. A 20-year-old man was shot in the side, and a 28-year-old man was shot in the leg. Police believe the shooting was gang-related and occurred during a fight.

Just after 9 p.m., a 15-year-old girl was shot in the hand on the 3400 block of West Evergreen Avenue in Humboldt Park, police said.

Police also reported a shooting on the 3300 block of West Huron Avenue at 10:50 p.m. Saturday. A man who had been shot multiple times was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital.

There were 300 officers working the festival, some of them undercover, Weis said.

“I thought we had the place locked down in a manner that would make it manageable and allow people to enjoy themselves,” Weis said. “We have worked well with organizers to provide a safe environment.”

Overall, Weis said the Puerto Rican Day festival has been a success and people have “behaved themselves and been reasonable.”

At 10:15 p.m., two men and a woman were shot in the 6200 block of South Lake Shore Drive in Woodlawn, police said. A 26-year-old man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound in his back; a 19-year-old woman was treated and released from Northwestern with a graze wound to her leg; and a 15-year-old boy was treated and released from Comer Children’s Hospital for a gunshot wound in the foot.

About an hour later, three people were shot and one died on the 700 block of West 111th Street in the Roseland neighborhood, Rosado said. A 20-year-old man was shot in the back, a 19-year-old man was shot in the stomach and a 21-year-old man was shot in his left arm. Two were taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, while the third man’s condition had stabilized, officials said. The 20-year-old later died.

At least one of the men involved in the Roseland shooting was a documented gang member, Weis said. “Residents must join together in their disgust and rejection of this armed behavior which endangers everyone,” he said.

In other news Sunday, Weis said overall complaints against the Chicago Police Department declined 12 percent in 2009. Through May of this year, complaints have decreased 7 percent, compared with the same period in 2009, he said.

I disagree. Obviously it’s a gun control problem in the fact that their gun control doesn’t work to stop criminals from obtaining and illegally using them. It’s also a gun control problem due to law abiding citizens being restricted from owning handguns in Chicago so that they’re unable to defend themselves against these scumbags.

I think we’re probably on the same page here and maybe we’re just wording things differently. My intention isn’t to argue semantics but there is definitely a problem with Chicago’s gun control.

You’re right. We are on the same page. I need to choose my words more correctly.

I was meaning, that more gun control is not the answer. There are good people who have no choice but to live in the poorer areas of town. They should be allowed the means to protect themselves.

Spending most of my free time with three daughters, all under age seven, has had a disastrous effect on my vocabulary. Although I can recite about every song that the Little Einsteins have ever recorded.

Though I agree with you guys that the Chicago gun ban is rediculous, I don’t think the upcoming SCOTUS ruling [when, not if it deems the ban unconstitutional ;)] would have changed any of these killings.

All of them sound like gang violence and not attempted robbery, home invasion, buglrary and so on in whicn an armed home owner would need to defend him/herself.

Obviosly a law abiding citizen should have the right to preotect him/her self with a firearm because I am sure there are plenty of cases of when this type of violent individual would come to a law abiding citizen, but not in the cases listed in the post above.

What should the 1 y o baby have done? Shot back? Clearly bystanders will still be injured/killed by these thugs so allowing responsible handgun ownership will not change this, and I say good. Let there idiots take each other out. Let them kill themselves off as long as the goog guy can protect himself when they come-a-kncoking.

I think its just a bad example to use for our argument in defeating Chicago’s hangun bann. If someone who is currently illegaly owing a handgun in the city limits kills a perp trying to assault him, rob him or burglarize his home and in doing so stops a chrime from happening and takes out another low life, THAT is a good argument for lifting the ban. I believe one article like that was posted before with the cops refusing to press charges even though owing a handgun was “illegal” at the time. Thats the kind of examples that should be used in our argument against Mayor Daley, not gang on gang shootings.

just my $0.02

But, but you can’t have guns in Chicago…how can this be?:rolleyes:

Lies, all lies!! They don’t have gun crimes in Chicago - they have very strict gun control laws.

This is nothing more than propaganda. :stuck_out_tongue:

i bet most of these people shot are drug dealers, trash killing other trash

I agree that this rash of murders across the city is not a “Gun Control” problem, but rather a social problem. These people are savages, and they will continue to kill each other regardless.

I also agree that the good law abiding folks in the city should be allowed to own whatever they want to defend themselves in their own homes and on the streets of this city from these particular savages.

block off the exits to the ‘‘hood’’, pass out better firearms and bullets, let them take care of each other. problem solved.

I just heard at work that it was 60 shot over 5 days.

While gun control here definitely does not work, it’s primarily a social problem. The majority were gang or drug related, not decent people who should have been allowed to defend themselves.

You just hit the nail on the head. A lot of criminals get some form of public assistance, but most of the welfare agencies will not share any information with LE. When you factor in the costs to society (public assistance, criminal justice, etc.) it’s a wonder the average taxpayer has any discretionary income left.

I think most of us agree that Gun Control is not the answer.

Real life imitating the movies - Escape From NY and Escape From LA

Even though muder is illegal, more gun laws will stop them

Now some of you guy’s are just being down right insensetive. After all they are victims of society, they can’t help themselves as they don’t have any male role models.

On a serious note though, in inner city cesspools like this the oxygen theives are bacially reverting back to tribalism.

What about Obama?

I think you just answered your own question.

IMHO, LTC Grossman is right: There are wolves, sheep, and sheepdogs. It has always been this way and it always will be this way (until the Second Coming, anyway). It does seem like the cities that have embraced liberalism for a few generations are imploding. Detroit seems to have led the way but there will be other cities. Our Industrial Revolution is decline, so what reason is there for a productive citizen to live in a city that’s in decline?

In addition, thanks to our vastly improved communications over the past generation, we get our news live. Before the invention of the telegraph, it took so long for news to spread that it was almost irrelevant by the time it was delivered.

All great civilizations have rotted away from within. The deindustrialization of America is by no means an accident. The powers at be set this into motion long ago. Moral decay is just one symptom. America is in trouble and unless radical changes are made the damage will be irreversible and there will be great suffering for her inhabitants.
