500th post and a new build in progress

I debated about starting a thread on this build as I wanted to acquire a few more pieces first. But in researching the parts that I thought I wanted to finish this one out with…I have stumbled upon a few questions I wanted to pose to the members of M4.
First off what I have already put together.

I bought this DSA ZM4 Stripped Lower from a local shop. Didn’t realize it was blemished until after I got it home. But the price was still alright so I don’t feel bad…Plus while it is obvious in the Photo…it is next to impossible to see the blem with the naked eye.
Another thing that made this an overall good purchase was that I got a DPMS LPK for a very reasonable price.

I added a BCM: M4 Stock Kit - (w/ 6-Position Milspec Rec Ext) w/H- Buffer.

and a ProMag: Single Point Sling Attachment Plate. (PM140B) I haven’t staked the castle nut yet as I am not really happy with the fit of the Promag part and I may change it out before I get the the Upper Build completed.

Bravo Company had a decent enough price on BCM: Upper Receiver Assembly (w/ Laser T-Markings) - M4 Flat Top (M4 Feedramps.)

and at the risk of being labeled a BCM Fanboy… I also pulled the trigger and purchased the Gunfighter Model 4 Charging Handle and BCM Auto BCG

Overall I like the way this build is coming together so far…the DSA is machined well and other than a slight deformation of the roll pin in the trigger guard…(Didn’t have roll pin punches and used a standard flat tipped pin punch.) Everything assembled easily taking approx 30 minutes from start to finish.

My plans for the upper include more shipping charges from BCM as I intend to purchase in the near future the following.
BCM Standard 16" Mid Length Barrel, Stripped
Yankee Hill Machine Phantom - Original 4 Port Flash Hider
LaRue Tactical Low Profile Gas Block LT-202 for .750" barrels
BCM Folding Battle Sight - Front&REAR (mfg by Troy Ind)
and the neceessary parts such as Delta Ring, Barrel Nut, Gas Tube…etc.

Now my dilema and the questions I have…I wanted a Free Float Rail System that will cover up the entire gas system on the BCM Middy Bbl. I was under the impression that the 9" DD Omega would fit this need…but have since been informed that I will need the 12".

I would appreciate any recommendations the members here might have on rails and whether or not it is worth even worying about fre floating a 16" M4…?..Another rail system I am seriously looking into is the 10" LaRue.

Second question: Do I really want a flip up front sight or not? I like the idea of a rock solid front sight that come with the Standard Sight Post…But I do plan to add an optic. The Tasco Micro T1 is what I am leaning towards…and would like to keep the field of view clutter free.

I look forward to any advice that might be thrown my way as I want this Firearm to be a rock solid build.

Are you set on a quad rail? Would you be open to something like the troy/vtac battle rail? It seems that with your standard m4 stock a 12 inch quad rail on the front is going to make the rifle a little front heavy.

I think you would be fine with something other than a front sight post. I have a fixed bcm and like it. The fixed or folding front sight posts just require a little more attention than the front sight post. All you have to do is loctite them and mark the screws so you know if they are backing out.

If you like the idea of the quad rail maybe consider a heavier stock like the ubr to balance it out. Or you could not worry about the weight distribution and you’d be fine too.

Keep us posted, and good luck.
