5.56 sbr options

I already have a sig 553 sbr and enjoy the heck out of it. I have been thinking of getting another sbr in the same vein. By that I mean a 5.56 sbr with a folding stock. I’d like to be of similar length. I’d also like it to have a hard use barrel such as hammer forged chrome lined. As a bonus I’d like it to be suppressor friendly.

As near as I can tell my options are

  1. another sig 553 (pistol / ~ $3500)
  2. a Scar 16 (carbine with conversion bbl / $4500)
  3. a Bren 805 (pistol / ~$1700)
  4. a B&T APC (pistol / ~ $3500)
  5. a Beretta ARX 100 (factory sbr / $900)
  6. an Arsenal SLR 106 (factory sbr / $1700)

Am I missing anything?

What are your thoughts on these choices?

Reliability, quality, value etc?

Thanks

Why not an AR with a LAW folder?

What about an ACR, Faxon ARAK, or even a XCR.
And for a Scar why not just cut the barrel?

I thought about that at one point but I’m kind of board with ar15s.

That would be very affordable thought

Are these all good to go reliability wise? I don’t see much about them online. At least not the later two.

Your prices are a little off. You can get the CZ Bren for about $1300 now. Also, the B & T you can have for about 2900.

Out of the options listed, I would buy the Beretta ARX 100. I own one with the 16" barrel and it is a first class rifle. It is lightweight, reliable, has good ergonomics, and accurate. Plus at it’s price it is a great value for the money.

Galil ace is one other option. About $1500. I am in the process of seriously considering the 553. What can you tell me about yours?

Do you own a SBR AR lower?

I was trying to take into account stocks and conversion parts but yes was using rough numbers.

Is the ace a 5.56 ?

Yes I have an ar sbr

They have 5.56, .308, and 7.62x39 models.

The SLR 106 is probably one of the lightest options at only 6 lbs and folds up more compact than an MP5. ZenitCo makes a small clamp on top rail that attaches to the rear sight that can accommodate an Aimpoint micro if needed. Also a railed handguard with a fold up forward grip.

Are you happy with the quality? Are the sights junk? Is it 100% reliable? Honestly of all of them I listed it intrests me the most.

The things I like about my sig are the quality the durability and the utilitarian simplicity.

I like that it is almost heirloom quality. I feel like I can shoot it and still have something of value to give to my kids someday.

I’m not about ergonomics or ambi or all kinds of mounting options. I’m kinda kiss.aimpoint micro surefire scout and a surefire can are the max accessories I’d ever use.

In this class of weapon I’d be fine with irons if they were decent.

The sights are Krink sights, very short range. You can get a narrower front sight post if needed from Tech-Sights. However I just suggest the mini rail from ZenitCo that mounts on the rear sight area to accommodate an Aimpoint. My 106UR has been reliable and I own a full set of Arsenal 5.56 AK’s. I like them overall more than my Colt AR’s and AUG’s.

Here’s some ZenitCo rail offerings, you can see the AKS74U options about halfway down;

Anybody building micro galils from parts kits ?

My picks:
Sig 553-2 LB with removable flash hider, 4-pos suppressor compatible gas valve.
B&T apc223.

Keep in mind the 553 will need the addition of the 4-pos gas valve for suppressed use ($150 or so). And will also need the aluminum railed fore-end ($450).

The APC223 just needs a stock.

Lower cost option, I think the IWI ACE 5.56 looks great. I would personally choose it if I wanted a sbr AK variant. But I’m not sure how they perform suppressed.

Tough decision. I’m a SIG fanatic. If this is just for fun, adding another 553 to the stable is never the wrong answer. The APC 223 offers updated ergos/optic and accessory mounting/suppressor capability. The APC223 is my current personal favorite of the next-gen rifles. Add a collapsible cqb stock and it is an absurdly compact SBR.

Why do you say the sig needs the aluminum railed forend?

The 552/553 plastic handguard was an afterthought IMO. It does a poor job at insulating the support hand from the barrel during prolonged shooting. And it wobbles when a vfg is attached. I have two 552s and a 553, only one aluminum railed fore-end. The rifle with the railed fore-end is the one that goes to the range. The railed fore-end is a must.

I assume you use the forend that is directly from sig.
