I was considering to cut down my 16in 5.45x 39 to 12.5. or buy a barrel. I was told that 5.45 x 39 SBR do not function well and terribly inaccurate. does any one have one. Thanks
While I can’t answer in relation to an AR platform I can tell you that a 12.5" 5.45x39 out of an AK platform is just as accurate as a 16" gun in my limited experience. I had one built years ago and have had no issues with either function or accuracy.
Back when 5.45 was dirt cheap I could see the interest, but with prices the way they are now I don’t see much reason for a 5.45 AR.
Ballistic Advantage 10.5" barrel… zeroed at 50 yds can hold about a 2" group using Wolf. Should probably break out some better ammo 1 day just to see…
Long range, effective accuracy from a pistol. 6.5 Grendel
I spent years trying to get one of their bolts and a barrel. It’s like one day they stopped making them.
This round is awesome in my SAR-2,
But keyholes in my AR.
What?? I buy BA several times a year.
i have an older spike tactical 16in upper which i was planing to cut. I have a spare barrel that i can always can go back to 16
Back in the day I cut down a 16" S&W barrel down to 11.5". Mainly as a cheap trainer. Its been through numerous cans of 5.45 and even through a Pat Rogers carbine school with NO issues. As mentioned based on the ammo sometimes it will keyhole but that has nothing at all to do with the barrel length. Still running strong and if I know I will not have to engage steel targets I use it to burn through the once cheap ammo I still have on hand.
Been running mine since the beginning with C-Products mags.
When is the last time you bought a 5.45 barrel, let alone bolt from them?
Sorry, I responded to my own post. You’re right, I haven’t seen any 5.45’s
If I remember correctly true 5.45 barrels under 16 inches have a different twist rate
I say give them a ring and see… gotta feeling they’re making them in batches now, remember seeing them on the site last November. Another maker is Adams Arms…

Ah that’s right they have a piston!

I have a 5.45-10.5" Ballastic Advantage barrel on an ar pistol. It shots the 7N6 well. It will destroy a golf ball at 50-75 yards, the bullet exits side ways. Not exactly a scientific test. I have never tried grouping it but with a red dot it will hit what I aim at. With a few exceptions the shorter the barrel the more accurate because the barrel will be stiffer.

Definitely an interesting round. Fun to shoot. Still cheap to stock up on.
Wanted to do a 5.45 AR build but since 7N6 isn’t being imported loss interest
I’ve been shooting 7n6 out of an AR upper for years, a fun round with interesting ballistics but when it got banned I tried a few commercial loads and my 1/9 barrel did not group well with any of them. Fortunately I have a large stockpile of 7n6 but when it’s gone I’ll stick to 7.62x39 & 6.5 Grendel.
5.45x39 AR parts have really dried up, not gone but outside of AK74s there’s not much demand for it. And ballistically I think 6.5 g beats the pants off it, and 12” 6.5g barrels are plentiful.
