5.45mm steel case performance in AR15's

Do 5.45mm AR’s have the same steel case extraction problems as some shit brand tight chambered “5.56mm” AR’s?

If the chambers out of spec … nothings going to work right.

If the chambers out of spec … nothings going to work right

It would still be nice to hear some first hand reports about what’s going on with 5.45mm AR’s.

I figure if there are no issues with carbine length 5.45mm AR’s with stock extractors and such, then maybe the case taper is the sole factor in its reliability.

Kal:
I have a sample of one. A S&W upper in 5.45x39. I ran it for a while with a DD7 inch rail and then at about 12K changed to a VTAC/TROY 9
inch. I have not messed with the gas port, buffer ect. I just lubed it an ran the upper. I now have just shy of 17,000 booked rounds on it.
I run my gear wet, wet is good. The gas tube was replaced at just over 12,000 when the VTAC tube was installed. It was replaced because of the round count, not failure, or gas problems. At this time the muzzle crown was cleaner and a new falshider was installed because the old one was a bit rusty, GOT M4 aka Robb had one laying around and just hooked me up. The extractor shit the bed during a class at about 11,300 to 11, 400 rounds. I replaced the extractor, spring and insert an went on with the class.

The upper has completed one three day E.A.G. class and two VTAC three day classes.

Mags have been deselected, after two malfunctions caused by a mag, and I pitch it.The bolt tail is a bit corroded as I do not diligently scrape carbon from the tail.

All of the ammo fired was Russian 7n6 military ball from the 1970’s. And every blessed round has gone off. No slit cases, no stuck cases, no problems.

I will buy build another one. And I have about 17,000 more rounds in the basement.

I have an Alexander Arms 5.45 and I have zero extraction problems with Wolf or Silver Bear so far after a few hundred rounds. It’s fun to shoot but I prefer the AK74 so far because…

I do have lots of problems with C Mags not chambering the round accurately and consistently. I am returning those to C Mag.

I’ve had no problems with Wolf, Tula or Silver Bear in my S&W or with the 11 C Product mags I have.

Do you really have to ask this question? I mean does brass cased 5.45 even exist?

No. Very reliable.

You bastard!

Nice post MTR7. That really makes me regret missing the 5.45 boat.

Ditto. The rifle runs fine but the mags do not and will drive you crazy. I would not expect extraction problems because of the case taper but that’s an educated guess. I do prefer Silver Bear for the AR. And so far, I also prefer my 74 until the mag problem is cured.

5.45 has lower chamber pressure.

pmags loaded to 20 work 100%. Also try adjusting the right side feed lips of your crap prods mags.

I’ve posted about my frustration with C mags in 5.45. Yesterday I took several C mags out to shoot just to prove to myself they were just not going to work before I sent them back to C Products.
I had left the mags loaded with 20- 25 rounds for about four days. So I stepped out the back door and let 'er rip. I kept waiting for the inevitable jam…which didn’t happen – I was shooting Silver Bear FMJ. I was shocked at the difference. So, maybe the mags need to be as fully loaded as possible and let the mag sit and the spring take a set. I can definitely notice they load easier now and don’t nose dive when I get high in the round count. So I have now found two that seem to work, only three more to test again. I have tried loading the Mag Pul with 15-20 and that seems to work, too. I’d still like to have a 25 rounds or more magazine.

MTR7 - how goes it big boy? Keep an eye on that barrel. Mine went south at around 12k. Eyeing an melonited middy from Ballistic Advantage, but no need for it right now.

SouthPark - try lubing the follower. The followers on all my mags (new and old) hang up causing a nosedive or double feed. Had one hang up at the bottom of the mag body and I skittled a full mag on the line. Be careful clearing it since ripping the mag may spread the feed lips.

I got some Liquid Wrench Dry Lube from Walmart and sprayed inside the mag body thru the bottom drain hole. That helped alot. Have never had any issues with the 11 that I have other that the springs being tight when they were new.

Thanks Bob, that’s a good idea, as it’s obvious that something is binding inside the mags that don’t run. I am going to give them all a run this weekend and see how they do at 20 degrees. Nothing would please me better than that the mags do run well. Some have had good luck with theirs, so maybe I will as well.

'Tis the route I went after cussing too many C Products Mags. I can do 20+ round loaded Emags and they work great. I have just accepted that as the interim fix. I have the Adams Arms upper that has Melonited Piston Parts, Barrel, Bolt Carrier, and Flash Hider.
