5.45 magazines

Being very enthusiastic over the prospect of shooting center fire for fifteen cents a shot I assembled a 5.45 upper with an Adams barrel, upper, piston kit and Daniel Defense rail. The trouble is the magazines. One, a C Products came with the barrel and I purchased two, AR-Stoner brand. None work correctly. Despite the fact that it is possible to stuff 30 cartridges, none of the three will function reliably with more than 12 cartridges. Except for the finish the two brands are of identical dimensions and features. I wonder if they are not made on the same dies. Mine are very similar to a 30 round 5.56 magazine which is, I think the source of the trouble. An AK mag is steeply curved to accommodate the steep taper of the 7.62X39 or 5.45X39 cartridge. These magazines have the usual slight bend in the center. I hope someone will make a magazine with a straight upper section to fit in the AR magwell, the rest of the magazine curved like an AK mag. Until then, I guess I have to get by with 12 shot mags.

I feel your pain. IIRC, Lebowski uses CProducts mags without an issue but I have 3 and not a damn one will work well. If anyone does a mod. To them please share, it’s the only aspect that keeps me from using my 5.45.

the old c-p guys are alive and well. (good/bad ???) they are under the name of the company that did some work for them. the new mags have better springs which was always the weak link. i have 30 of the old 1’s andd they work fine. but i was a dealer of the ar mags and i must have sold 15,000 over the last several years. provided/sold all the mags for the movie Battle L.A. prop master who is a friend of mine said they worked fine.

call Brian at Aim. he has some of them and they work just fine.
i got some samples and they work also. 100%
name is on his web site.
the name of the “company” is 1 of their suppliers… all at at the warehouse and i am at home. dont remember.

the 1’s that Brian sells are as good as it gets. cant do any better. also u have Aim between u and the people that run the new company.

small note: i have some of the 7.62x39 AR mags for a new m-4 i just built out of old colt parts laying around. cross gun did a lot and a friend of his knew about the extended firing pin (a must have). gun runs 100%. not 1 failure after building wht the new f/p.

ask if u need to ,i am around
email me direct if u need more DO NOT email me here.

good luck

The c products mag I got with my spikes 5.45 doesn’t work either. The c products mags I bought at a gun shop do, it’s hit or miss. ASC has taken over c products. AR Stoner mags were made by c products for Midway if I remember right, so all of the mags are essentially the same thing.

FWIW I have a dozen of the old CP mags and they all work great

just use modified window mrev pmags

I talked to Mat at Adams and he told me that new Adams kits ship with Ammunition Storage Components magazines. He said some C-Products mags work fine and others don’t. I called ASC to order some magazines and talked to a fellow there who told me that if I have a problem with their 5.45 mags that I will the the first. Eagerly awaiting my ASC magazines. I Googled “AR-Stoner” and it does seem to be Midway’s store brand. The two AR-Stoner I bought are going back to Midway as is the C-Products that came with the Adams kit.

Unknown to me when I went down the path of 7.62x39 AR it was at the time when C-products was folding and ASC was starting.

Ordered a 30 round C-products and a 5 and 10 round ASC. NONE of which worked.

Just ordered a 30 round 5.45 and 30 round 7.62x39 from ASC and happy to say each works just fine. IMO I think it was my shit luck that one was folding and the other just starting when I ordered them the first time.

We use and carry the Ammuntion Storage Components with our 545 uppers and rifles. We like them a lot better then the C Products mags, although we got lucky with most of the C Products mags we had.

I think you’ll have good luck the ASC mags, we have so far and have not heard any issues from our customers.

Take care,
Dave

Can anyone show me a real difference between a CP mag and an ASC? It all seems to be conjecture at this point, leading me to believe they are simply a turd by a different name.

I ended up selling my 5.45 upper in no small part thanks to the shitty CP mags and the workaround solutions I was forced into. I envy those of you who have had thousands of trouble free rounds through your mags. I had 10 CP mags, 8 Lancers and 1 or 2 modified PMags that would all intermittently fail to feed or lock the bolt back. I can’t fault the 556 mags for failing, I was trying to get them to do something they weren’t designed to do. The CP mags have no excuse.

I dont have two to take pictures of a side by side comparison but I think the main difference is quality control. Some of the C Prod mags I saw I was shocked left the factory that way, bent springs, broken welds, bad finish etc. The ASC mags that I have I have been impressed with mostly because they appear to be taking the time to make a quality mag and making sure before they go out the door. The 545 mags have a better, grey, finish then the old black C Prod mags, and I havent seen one broken one yet. The 223/556 ASC mags that we sell have also been good. They come with a anti tilt follower for 10 bucks and run well. I ran a bunch of them through my most recent carbine class with out any issues. So far we are having great luck with them but I, probably like you, was a little concearned when I heard they were taking over tooling from C Prod, but so far so good. I can get around to posting pictures if you want but in our most recent videos we have been using only the ASC videos for our 545.

If I can answer any questions please let me know.
Thanks,
Dave

its the same characters under a new name. easier than a flood. mags now come form AIM and that is where i would get them. Brian is a stand up fellow and we have bought a metric shit pot full of ammo and other gear.

Cross Gun and i have shot both.

f.y.i. as best i can tell they have a stronger spring. different color tube. same follower. same mfg. same coating company. since u sold yours, u probably have not shot the new mags became available. i use these mags in 5x45 & 7.62x39 form the same mfg.
all work flawlessly for me and i am happy. just bought another 10-k in ammo for the 5x45 from AIM. puts me over 25k, for the future.

sorry u were unhappy. Ur skepticism is expected due to your past history. we love it and plan on being in business long after Obama bans imports.

i have had bad mags, at least 5-6. just chucked them when they shut down. have sold over 200 5x45. dont now if i will again as AIM sells them so I dont care. never modified the 1st mag. have more than enuff for my 3 uppers. the bullet was also inside m.o.s. at 50 yd zero with a knac’s can on it.

I gotta try some ASC mags because my newest C Products mags let me down in a big way at the last Defoor carbine class. Switching back to my old mags only made the problems go away. My buddies observed that I was lightning fast with remediation though

For the price of purchasing all that equipment to shoot 5.45 for 15 cents a round you could buy a complete reloading set up, learn a new and very useful skill/hobby and shoot 5.56 for about 15 cents a round while loading many many other rounds for 1/3 rd to 1/2 of what factory ammo costs.

I am able to load my own M262 mod 1 clones for about 24 cents.

You need the upper, mags, and ammo. If your time is precious to you (like mine is), the 5.45 is certainly worth the money. I don’t have a ton of time; I want to SHOOT.

I have gone years not shooting a single factory cartridge, everything I shot was handloaded. I have guns that have never fired one factory cartridge out of the many they have fired. I have thousands and thousands of 7.62 and 5.56 mm cases, bullets and primers. I am a reloader and have been for 40 years. The most lovely and wonderful thing about 5.45 is not having to pick up the brass since there is no brass. I have a magnet I use to get it in the garbage can, five minutes, no stooping, no crawling on my knees. To quote Lawrence Welk, “Wonerful, wonerful, wonerful!”

That only works if you’re able to salvage your own brass. I shoot a lot of my own reloaded 5.56 but there are many time when I can’t pick up my cases or just don’t want to. That’s when the 5.45 comes in.

I would rather be working out or spending time with my family and dog. Maybe when I retire…

I did some checking on Midway and found bullets for about 9 cents each, primers for 4 cents and powder for about 12 cents for a 35 grain charge. That’s 25 cents not including shipping or hazmat fees. I’m sure these prices can be beat but not by a lot. I’d like to know how you can load a 5.56 for 15 cents.

I see Sierra Matchkings going for about $220 a thousand and up. How do you do this?

There goes the big reloading myth…
