5.45 10 round mags?

My build plans involve a 5.45 upper in the very near future, to be able to enjoy the benefits of accurate cheap ammo. I have the rather unfortunate problem of living in a bad state where the only new magazines I can have are 10 rounds. What should I do about this that would work? Should I modify 10 round 5.56 mags somehow? Any help is much appreciated.

Someone else may actually cut them down as well.

That’ll probably work, but OUCH $30? 3x the price of an ordinary mag just because my wife and I live in New York.

Arsenal makes them, I got one with my SGL 31 this year. Check with them.
I use it for bench testing.
Try some of the new Hornady V-Max round out-there is finally a good hollow point for the 5.45

I see lots of Arsenal AK stuff, nothing for the AR15 platform.

My bad, I thought you were talking about AK’s:p

C-Products is the only manufacturer I know of for AR 5.45 mags.
Contact them.
The other option would be to get a 5.56 10 rounder and swap followers, I believe this is the difference in the C-Products mags.

Crap Products makes a 5.45x39 10 rounder. Atleast I thought they did.

I suggest going with the cheaper CProducts mags then. I knew they were out there somewhere. The expensive ones are likely modded CProducts anyways. Use a light lube on the follower to prevent it from hanging up. Keep an eye on the feed lips as they tend to spread prematurely causing double feeds.

I actually never had a problem with my 30 round mag followers getting hung up. On one of the mags the right feed lip got slighty bent so it caused a few double feeds, nothing major. I think you will be fine with the C-product mags.

Double feeds are major for me. I understand that this is a training gun for most (it is for me), but having faulty gear gets in the way of learning. I mark the mags with spread feed lips, and bring them out when I’m trying to induce malfunctions (3 so far, not including the 2 I trashed).

I’ve had the followers hang up straight out of the package, and they’re good to go with lube. On the other hand, some of my most reliable CP 5.45 mags (a relative thing) have almost 1000 rounds through them. The problem with the follower hanging is that it usually induces a double feed, and when you strip the magazine to clear the malfunction, the feed lips will generally get spread ruining the magazine unless you’re careful. So it’s either baby the magazine and develop a training scar, or do it the right way and trash a cheap magazine.

Anyways, enough bitching. The CP mags should do just fine, and I think they’re the best 5.45 option we’ve got for now.

regular 10-rnd 5.56 c-products mags with magpul followers work just fine with 5.45

I’ve heard that 5.45 feeds in standard 5.56 GI mags, if you download them to 20-22 rounds and possibly with a follower change, is that true?

If this is in fact the case, the OP can just use standard pre-ban high capacity mags in NY, not necessarily 10-rounders…

I know Pmags work great. I tried a gi mag and it didnt work all that well, but pmags are 100% when loaded to 20. The gi mag seems to nose dive. Maybe like you said with a follower change. The crap prod follower will not fit in any other mag body so maybe a no tilt .556 follower. I just use pmags.

I had tried Pmags back in the day, and just couldn’t get comfortable with how much pressure there was on the mag body past 15 rounds or so. I guess I will have to revisit that since I happened to have a 10/30 Pmag from Midwest PX laying around. 10 rounds of 5.45 seated very nicely with nosediving. I haven’t test fired, but it looks like this would be a very viable option for those looking for a 10 round 5.45 magazine. Or a 5.56 magazine for that matter…

However, the “stubby” 10 round Pmag based on the pre-M bodies nosedives after 3-4 rounds. I think the tapered casing of the 5.45 cartridge just needs more curvature in the magazine body. I wonder if the 19 round Pmag cut from the 30 round curved body might be the optimal magazine for the 5.45?
