.458 SOCOM

Does anybody know anything about the .458 SOCOM uppers and Mags. Need info to make an informed choice.

Thanks in advance.
Dirk

My memory is hazy on a lot of stuff, but yes I know some things about the 458 SOCOM. Ask away…

If I don’t know the answers directly, Cold might chime in, or maybe we’d be graced with Marty’s insights.

What would you like to know?

The 458 SOCOM will work on any mil spec AR 15 lower, uses unmodified USGI ALUM mags without issue ( you get 9 rounds in a 30 round USGI alum mag) and the 458 SOCOM uses a modified AR bolt but of course uses a standard Bolt carrier. Ammo can be found at SBR, CorBon, Reeds Ammo and Accuswage, possibly one more I am forgetting. ALSO, Barnes makes an exclusive bullet for the 458 SOCOM these days, pretty nifty.

Sorry about the time delay I was watching the military channel

Had an old friend contact me yesterday, "retired Lt Col Army “little army”. He was asking what I knew about the system. I didn’t have an answer and thought it odd that he was asking me, and not some of his past associates.

Anyway the man has been really good to me with equipment support, training considerations, and up to date contacts regarding sniping and my 338LM. I would like to get back to him with solid platform information.

I think he’s planning on putting a RR upper on his Noveske in the near future. Per Colds post I already put forth bad info regarding mag capacity.

I think the questions would be .

Will M4 mags work with lip restructure.
How many rounds per mag.
Is it a worthy consideration for close work around ones home.
Does the platform have any hunting merit.
Cost and what brand is top of the pile VS bottom of the pile.
Is the round here to stay or a flash in the pan.
Anybody shot one and their view on the platform.

Thank you in advance.
Dirk

There are some 458 SOCOM forums

Santa brought me a custom TJ 458 barrel on 24 Dec… Have not done anything with it – waiting for a rail system to come in.

Also look at http://www.teppojutsu.com/ . 458 info there as that is the birthplace

I’ve had one for a long time now. They are fun guns to have. Think they are more than a flash in the pan but a serious shooter would probably be a reloader as well since the ammo is expensive. It is good for reloading because it uses the same bullets as the .45-70 and all the way up to the .458 Mag class. You can get bullets from 250 grains on up to 600+ and they run the gamut from cheap bulk packed Remington 300 grain bullets to the very heavy and expensive hunting rounds.

As Cold mentioned the magazine capacity is cut substantially due to the massive size of the cases. Standard aluminum mags work best, the P-Mags don’t work because they have cutouts for 5.56 rounds in a staggered pattern.

I saw pictures of a massive Alaskan moose that a .458 SOCOM brought down so it is good for hunting. I wanted to take mine hog hunting in Texas but never got the chance. I think it would have been a devastating gun on hogs. It delivers a lot of punch to the target - much more than say a .44 Mag. At my dealers he has steel swinging plates set up. He let me shoot one thinking it wouldn’t do more than his .44 Mag. Well, the plate swung around the rack five times (his .44 Mag only made one turn) and it basically cracked the 1/2" steel plate into two pieces.

Spooky

PMAGs work just fine with the 458 SOCOM.

(Standard aluminum mags have the fake offset round as well btw)

It appears that Wilson Combat is now doing 458 SOCOM stuff including barrel/gas block/BCG kits and complete uppers.

Looks like a lot of energy and it’s becoming a growing trend among pig hunters from what I’ve seen.

Just from what I’ve seen recently Wilson got into pig hunting and developed his 7.62x40 WT for that application. .458 only makes sense in a similar role… I never got the chance to bust a pig with mine while I lived in Texas.
