31 US Special Operations Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/07/world/asia/07afghanistan.html

The death total is 38, including 7 Afghan fighters. The Taliban is taking credit for the hit. It is the deadliest aviation crash in this war.

Please consider the family and friends of these outstanding soldiers in your thoughts and prayers. This is a devastating loss to the Special Operations community.

25 were SEALS

I just read this minutes ago. That’s pretty fucked up.

They are in my thoughts. Thank you for your service.

I couldn’t believe it when I first heard it. I can’t imagine what the family of those fine servicemen are going through now.

I thank them for their service. And I will pray for them and their families.

Sad news.

Fair winds & following seas Warriors.

Thank you for your sacrifices.

What a tragic loss of life. They will be missed.

A horrible loss for our country and their families. Rest in peace Warriors.

Man, that’s not good. Not good at all. RIP, Warriors.

Prayers sent for the fallen warriors, their families and friends. :frowning:

Everybody was high-fiving when NSW put Bin Laden in his grave. I hope just as many people put their money where their mouth is, and make a donation to help.

What a loss. . .damn.

Ironically, the SEALs that were aboard the downed chopper are being reported as being DEVGRU. I don’t know how big that team is, but I suspect we’ll soon see crowing about revenge for OBL.

At this point, it’s hard to even know what to say. Clearly a very dark day for the DEVGRU, and men of this caliber are not made quickly, nor in quantity, so it will take some time for the community to rebound from taking this kind of hit.

I can only take some slight consolation in the fact that it apparently happened during exfil, so it seems likely that these boys were still feeling pretty amped-up, satisfied with the events of the evening, and very much “in the zone.” No one is looking for it, but any warrior destined to meet an early fate would prefer that it happen on terms such as these … fresh from (or in) the fight, and surrounded by men who have been found worthy of the sacrifice.

My prayers go out to these families. We can do little more for the lost now than to pay them their rightful honor, but, but I am ever-mindful by the debt that we owe to those who are left behind.

AC

Prayers to their families & friends / fellow warriors…I bet there are some interesting discussions going on w/ Team 6 right now.

Sticks in my craw…wipe them out. Hate it when evil wins.

edit…is it routine to have so many smart & elite warriors in one bird unless you are on a mission?? The man count is mind boggling and heart wrenching.

i got the feeling their location and plans were leaked

RIP warriors.

It was be ashamed if we lost the heroes that pulled the trigger on osama.

Does anybody know if it’s standard practice to rotate team members out of the combat zone after such a delicate, high profile operation like that?

I just came across this on Fox. Stunning. Horribly tragic. RIP heros.

RIP warriors.

Its being reported now that they were NOT the ones who did Bin Laden, but they were from Six.

A senior U.S. Military officials tell Fox News, “We don’t believe that any of the special operators who were killed were involved in the Bin Laden operation.”

I’m sure AQ is going to use this big time for their propaganda. Fucking goat raping, booger eaters. And, fuck the media for reporting it was members of Team Six. They could have easily just kept it at “U. S. soldiers”. There was no reason to report that the ones killed were spec ops and Team Six. Of course, part of the blame needs to go to whoever gave the info to the media.

A very tragic loss and waste indeed. I know the CH-47’s payload but I’m still wondering why that many were placed aboard one aircraft.

Always sucks when you hear something like. I pray for them and their families!
