I’m sure this is too much to ask someone to explain in a thread, so I’m really just asking to be pointed in the direction of the best reference material. I’m about to pull the trigger on a Browning BAR ShortTrack in .308 win. I’ve never had any rifle experience outside of my AR’s - always bought mil-spec XM855 and such. How do I sort through all the various manufacturers, bullet types/weights, etc. to determine quality rounds to purchase/stay away from both for hunting and practice? I realize some trial and error is in order, but is anyone aware of a good reference guide to help me jump up the learning curve? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
It isn’t that complicated. What you are hunting will influence bullet selection.
I use Hornady 150gr SST on deer and it drops them DRT.
Larger game, larger bullets. Most major companies make reliable hunting rounds. Your rifle may like some better than others which may also influence your choice.
ETA: It would help if you were specific on what you are hunting.
When buying commercial hunting ammo I buy a quantity of rounds from the same lot and sight in with that specific round, verifying zero annually. I do not “practice” with my hunting rifles or ammo. I practice my shooting skills, as they are transferable, on other rifles.
