.308 AR

Does anyone have any experience shooting .308 AR’s from various manufacturers? I am plan on building one this year but not sure what company to go with.

Armalite or Noveske. Although Magpul is producing a magazine that won’t fit either one. The new generation AR10 mags that were once a scarce commodity, are now readily available directly from either Armalite or Noveske. I purchased a AR10 in November that will punch a hole out to 600 yards with ease…ATC

I have two Armalite’s that will shoot almost MOA with surplus ammo. Love 'em. I also just got a Rock River LAR-8, what a POS. JMHO.

I’ve been very favorably impressed with the DPMS LR308 guns.

I would recomend looking into the DPMS also. The availability of P-mags makes it a “must consider” for .308AR purchase.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

Why do you think the RRA is a POS. I have never held or seen one. Very curious.

Another thumbs up for the DPMS. I enjoy shooting mine.

After waiting almost 2 years to get one, it shoots like a dream. Probably a better shooter than I am. However, I have a ton of Fal mags, inch and metric. Of all the mags I have, close to fifty, only 15 will fully insert into the magwell. Of those 15 only 11 will drop free when the mag release is depressed. I even tried brand new FN Austrian manufactured mags, not one would go fully into the magwell. So out of 49 mags, new and used, I have really only 11 serviceable mags for this rifle. I will be calling RRA on Monday to see what can be done. I hate the thought of sending it back now that I finally have it. I’m very disappointed that this rifle would leave the factory like this.

I have had a total of 3 Armalite AR10’s; 2) were factory 16" guns one was an 10(t) and the other a 10a4, both had the barrels threaded and LMT stocks and the special buffer, Larue rail on the T and factory hand guard on the a4. . Both were very accurate rifles but, I had constant problems with extraction especially with NATO spec ammo. The problem was magnified when the gun got hot, I had sent both of them back to Armalite and they claimed to have opened up the chambers, when they returned the same problems persisted. I sold both rifles with under 500 round though each of them. Submarining the rifle after firing every round, when the rifle is hot blows. My AR10T has been broken and only fired 60 rounds total however, it is very accurate rifle and easy to shoot rapid well aimed shots.

You didn’t mention what you wanted to use the rifle for, If you are looking for a accurate semi auto rifle that wont see hard use I think any of the factory guns will probably work for you. If you want a ar10 battle rifle it would be best to look and see what the top tier ar15 manufactures to to their rifles and make sure it is also done on the ar10; staked gas key, pinned gas block, NATO spec chamber etc.

A big nod goes to the rifles that use the Knights Armament style Magazine, with Magpul producing a cost effective reliable magazine it makes it the platform of choice IMO.

I have also fired and observed both the Knights SASS and their battle rifle. Both ran very well.

I am going to build it for a long range accurate rifle. My M1A does a great job but I think I can get better accuracy out of a AR style rifle. I can also operate the AR platform under stress very well and I want to stick with what I have been training with for the last 20 years.

Has anyone shot the Panther™ LRT-SASS to verify their claim of sub MOA accuracy at long range out of an 18 inch gun? I am a little sceptical about sub MOA accuracy at LONG range with an 18 inch gun. I consider long range 700 plus… I know I have seen a few photos of the Panther™ LRT-SASS that members own. Input by those guys would be appreciated!

I get sub MOA out of my DPMS, but it has a 20 inch bbl.

This is a 3 shot group I got while trying to adjust my new Geiselle trigger. I wasnt even shooting for accuracy, just testing the new trigger:

.743-.308 = .435

This is a fun picture- this is a one shot group at 500 yards. This was the first time I ever shot at 500. I put a few rounds on a chest sized steel target to insure my clickage was right. Then I shot a few rounds on a 8 inch steel pie plate. since I was banging those consistently, I shot on the paper target. One shot. When my spotter said “Bulls” I stopped- I wanted to keep the target.

1 shot. 168 gr Georgia Arms HPBT. 500 yards.

KAC – I am biased of course

I think that our mag design is the best of the 7.62x51 guns (maybe the G3 is a better one) and Magpul is making the PMAG-LR in the SR-25 configuration.

Larue, LMT, DPMS use our mag, so I think you are better off with them than Armalite, or Noveske AR10’s.

Currently we do not sell our 7.62 guns commericially due to government production demands.

I heard Larue will be out in April, and DPMS is out, and not sure when Karl Lewis’s MRP308 will be out.

I know some Marine Scout Snipers that would agree with you  Is the Massoud going to use the PMAG-LR?

Yes the Massoud uses the PMAG-LR.
I did not include it as Magpul does not intend the produce the rifle by themselves, and it is not scheduled for production to the best of my knowledge.

Does KAC ever plan on selling them commercially???

Yes we do.

We keep hoping that we will soon be able to get the point that we can start manufacture of KMC SR-25’s for the public.

We have about 200 customers in line waiting. Trey is hard at work trying to get a more attractively priced 16" Carbine to the market as well, for when we can prodcue these.

I wish I could offer a better idea of a time frame, but I am confident that it will be by year end (but don’t lynch me if it is 2010).

We might be able to offer a small run guns in the short term - however that still needs to be hammered out.

All of us at KAC wish we could get both our government orders out the door, and have civilian orders go through as well, but at this time we cannot get both and still provide the highest of KAC quality into the guns, and we are not willing to sacrifice those standards.

Do you have any idea of price range for the long range gun? $2k to $3K or way higher??
