First of all i’d like to say hello to everyone as I didnt see an “introduce yourself” sub-forum or thread. Lately my desire to get an 5.56 AR has been sky rocketing but lately all the .308s have been growing on me so I would like to aquire a .308 first. I’d prefer to build one to mimick the KAC MK-11-MOD 0. my question is are there any websites that show compatabilities between different manuefacterers(spell check!!!)? Also what are you guy’s opinions on different makers? I’d like to bye a stripped lower and move forward from there. Any comments, opinions or search ideas will be greatly appreciated. Also, as I live in Texas i would like to have the option of adding a supressor. I will mainly use it for target shooting and the ocasional hog hunt, javelina and any other pesky neusances(can i get another spell check?). Also I need to be able to attach a brass deflector as I mainly shoot left handed. Thanks fellas for all your input.
Hello…
If I was in your position… Hypothetically.
I would accquire an AR10 lower and build it yourself using the parts you want(grip-stock-trigger-ambi mechanisms etc)
I would then buy an AR10 upper thats already gtg out of the box.
POF/ NOVESKE/ARMALITE etc.
Yhm phantom 5c2 makes a good muzzle device that allows a supressor… pn# 3302a
I would get a brass catcher from brownells… they are 39.00 or so…
Not sure if this helps, but I think it’s a good deal to pick up a DPMS for $1200, then swap out stuff you need/want later. One thing definitely worth squaring away up front is which mags you want to be able to run, and the answer is KAC/DPMS/etc. Unlike the AR-15, there are different versions of the AR-10 mag compatibility, and you’ll kick yourself if you buy the wrong lower.
I’m kinda in the same boat Chubbs, I recently bought an Armalite AR-10t rifle.
But the version I bought has the 20" heavy profile barrel and the whole thing weighs over 10 lbs without the scope.
So you guys are saying that I can buy a complete upper from POF or NOVESKE and just mate the two? The wait time for Armalite uppers is extreme right now.
I’d like to set it up with a 16 in. barrel and rails with a teli stock.
Anyone have any thoughts or ideas on the way to go with this set up?
Noveske will go on the Armalite platform. The POF is a DPMS style receiver.
The DPMS, POF, CMMG, JP, Fulton are pretty much (there are a few exceptions) compatible with both receiver and magazines.
The Armalite, Noveske are compatible. AR10 magazines, and receivers.
The KAC and Larue OSR are compatible - DPMS magazines and AR receivers.
The RRA is it’s own - I think DPMS style receiver and FN-FAL magazines.
Iron Ridge makes lowers for both DPMS and AR10 systems.
CMMG also makes a G3 magazine compatible lower.
i have another noob question on Armialite’s website they mention a bolt carrier assembly that says use with forward assist. what is the forward assist they are refering to? thanks again
I would take a serious look at the LaRue OSR. Mark posted yesterday that pre-orders should start shipping in the next few days. They have put alot of work into the OSR, and im confident it will be a superior platform straight out of the gate.
The .308 AR platform has been a hit or miss proposition in the past in terms of reliability. The amount of R&D that Mark & his crew have put into the new OSR should produce a reliable .308 platform.
I would wait for the OSR or LMT .308 rifles.
i prefer to build my own though, didn’t realize LaRue is right down the road from my house.
or are you asking what a forward assist actually is?
A forward assist is a device that allows a user to push the bolt carrier assembly into battery in the event it doesn’t fully go into battery.
The DPMS/KAC magazine seems to be the winner between the Armalite or DMPS/KAC pattern.
When the 762 Pmags and with the introduction of LaRue’s in houe 762 mag, I think things for that design will push it as the winner. Just a guess but if it were myself looking at getting a 308 or AR 10, the mag issue would be something to consider.
LWRCI has the Reaper coming out too, any one know what the price on the Larue and LMT might be complete?
i agree on the magazine issue. thank you for bringing that to my attention
I would wait to see what the LWRCi’s new rifle is like and also the LMT. Not sure what kind of time frame on those.
From www.larueosr.com The price is $2485.
Sig is suppose to come out with a 308 rifle according to what my friend’s Sig Rep told him.
Colemantyler.com has billet .308 lowers(DPMS) on sale for 275.00… I would start there and if it is out of stock… order it anyway. They are solid dudes. I have purchased 4 receivers from them.
Side charging upper with piston, fits on AR-10 lower and takes KAC/DPMS mags.
Is that on anybody’s horizon?
