Mark and I have been playing with some 300 loads and hit what we think is the low node. We tried 74 grains, MOA, 75 grains 2 MOA
76 grains, BUGHOLES. 5 shot group under a nickel. Maybe .25 MOA.
It was only running 2860 fps or so with a SD of 7.
77 grains SUCKED , all over the place.
We are going to try 78 , 79 and 79.5. Hoping to find a hotter .25 moa load.
I was pretty pumped up. Never had a 300 shoot like our 308’s. another range report to follow.
I’ve been reading a little on low/high nodes. Would you prefer an MOA gun that shot 150fps faster, or would you like Bugholes at 2860ish? Maybe a little hotter 20 fps since the chrono was 7 yards away.
This barrel has shot 90% of the loads around MOA. Note all these loads are very nice handloads but I still see a difference. It’s an M24 profile, it is beefy. Very impressive so far.
What I meant was, you have a good load, you guys
punch paper and smack steal right? 2860fps is fast, plus if your ES is as low as your SD I would not touch a thing and thank the reloading gods for your luck!
You have to ask yourself if chasing some mythical numbers is worth it? Whats is that going to get you at 1500m, 150 fps? Run the numbers in your pda and tell me if its worth chasing when you already have that load? If your out of adjustment then maybe.
But just for your consideration, I’m running a 27 1/2" blackstar 1-10, pushing a 185g VLD at 3030fps with a 81g charge of h1000. I cant go any faster, I could not safely push a 208g AMAX over 3k fps.
If your going to try anything try another primer first a cci 250 maybe.
I agree, we agree. Our 77gr SMK with H322 isn’t super hot, but it stacks holes and we get hits at 1k with it. Nothing wrong with using some XBR and get great results either, a little hotter.
That load is in my SHOOTER app at 2886 is taking that Amax to a mile supersonic. We loaded another 20 of that load to re validate it.
That may be the high mode for the 208 gr amax in 300WM? We"ll let you know.
That seems like a really good load. You might be at your high node. If you really want to find where the nodes are you guys should run a ladder test at around 800 yards. It will let you know if there is a higher node. It will also do it with less rounds.
With the sd number you have I would not go any further, unless once you get out at longer range and performance suffers.
I just got back from the range. Here’s is what worked for my .300 win mag stiller action, 25" bartlein m 24 contour. 208 amax H 1000 fc brass 77 grains 5 shots 2969 fps. SD is 9.My last shot was my flier:( overall real happy with this load.
Mark and I took Blackhawk matts , ( the one with wings I can’t remember) and rigged those poles to the matts. They didn’t come with those. Just rig your own up.
If I can remember, I took the matts to a "shoe repair - luggage repair " shop and had the guy put in a few eyelets. And that Mat with wings is vodoo now that you mention.
