300 Remington SA Ultramag

Does anyone use this? I am considering between 300 RSAUM or 308 for a Remington 700P LTR. Thoughts on recoil, accuracy, down range effectiveness, etc are much appreciated

I’ve used both calibers, still own a few .308’s, but sold the .300 RSAUM.
If I were to choose only ONE long range rifle, I’d choose the .308. It’s lighter, ammo is more available, ammo is cheaper, less recoil, and it’s more accurate as a round.
This being said, the .300 RSAUM is still a great round, but muzzle blast is ferocious and recoil is not much less than a .300 Win Mag… This being said about my Rem 700 SPS standard in .300 RSAUM which weighed about 7.6 lbs. unscoped and had a 24" bbl IIRC.
This is more of a hunting round, and for hunting purposes, is probably more useful than the .308, but for tactical purposes, “human hunting” - the .308 is plenty of power.
Accuracy wise, the .300 does fit into a short action obviously, which lends to better accuracy than standard or long actions do, being more “rigid” an action - but compared to a .308, it is slightly less accurate from my experience.
The .308’s lighter recoil will also help “flinchitis” - as the .300 is gonna smack you back a bit when you yank the trigger.

All this being said, if I were building a rifle with a 22" - 26" heavy barrel, with an adjustable stock, for tactical purposes, and shooting that would commonly put my shots past 800 yards, and up into 1100+, then I would choose the .300 RSAUM (this is if I could only choose between this and the .308), but if I were going to be doing the majority of my shooting under 800, then I’d choose the .308 every time.

My vote goes to the .308. Lighter recoil and cheaper ammo. Plenty of ummmf out to 800yrds.
