I never knew Brownell’s was such a big player in the mag world. According to the above document, the Govt will only consider Okay Industries and Brownells as potential vendors for this item.
Too bad Magpul couldn’t get a piece of that action ![]()

Be sort of glad they didn’t.
You think we’d be able to get them if the government had a big contract
for them?? I doubt they’d be as available as they are now…
KyAKGuy
Who is stamping brownells mags? The reason I won’t buy them is for fear that they were made by Cprod or something.
I stick to Okays too for GI mags.
My thoughts. Why in the hell are they buying crappy aluminum mags when there are better mags available? I could care less if Joe Blow can’t get PMAG’s all of a sudden because Magpul is fulfilling a contract to provide our troops with the best gear possible. But, maybe I am just selfish.
The same goes for Armor/carriers/plates/panals. I always roll my eyes when some geek gripes that a company will only provide these items to LE/MIL. Uh… it’s slightly more important that guys who really need the stuff get it.
Unless they have the 33710 cage code stamped on them, they haven’t been approved by the Gov.
Okay has it, will be nice to see Brownells with it as well.
Been using Brownells mags for sometime, they are very good quality.
Part of that I can understand. For example as a contractor there are some items such as a DBAL that I can’t even get w/o jumping through multiple hoops of fire and swamps filled with alligators. Hell, I even had a problem getting pressure switches for my AN/PAQ-2A. However, whining about something because of availability due to needs of the MIL/ LEA first is gay.
BTW- What size shirt do you wear?
They may be nice, but they aren’t as good as PMAG’s and I can almost guarantee that PMAG’s would only cost the .GOV about $1.50 more than aluminum. Last time I checked FEDLOG USGI mags were about $7.20 a piece.
33710 is unique to Okay/NHTMG. Each USGI mag supplier has a different cage code. I used to know a few of the codes by heart. But now there’s pmags (which have there own cage code too)
T-shirt? Large.
Possibly the .mil wants something with a little bit more of a known track record than the PMAG.
For all of those about to attack me, I am simply commenting on the time frame they have been available, not on their quality.
There are “known unknowns” and there are “unknown unknowns”…
The Katar,
You are probably right. But, at last I heard they weren’t even taking any reasonable steps to see if Magpuls were better and I believe that Rock Island/ TACOM mafia was even pursuing their own version of a PMAG. How much tax payers money are they going to waste on that endeavor?
I am certainly not going to argue with your statement.
We have a saying where I work as it applies to our management:
“You people can’t be helped!”
This isn’t an RFP for a better product. This is to buy an existing product. Govt rarely changes products without a big T&E runoff.
The 33170 code is the gov approved code…
1000% agreed.
From the document:
Brownells Inc. and Okay Industries Inc. are known proven producers of the 30 Round Magazine built to the Government Technical Data Package (TDP). All responsible sources may submit a proposal which shall be considered by the agency. There is a License Agreement between Colt Manufacturing Company, Incorporated and the US. The technical data package (TDP) for this solicitation and any resulting contract includes documents that are proprietary to Colt. Disclosure and use of the TDP are restricted by the Non-Disclosure and Non-Use Agreement.
Was Colt the original designer of the 30-round mag? They seem to have some proprietary rights with respect to this particular item.
Al 30rd mags have a TDP.
Polymer mags don’t (yet).
End of line.
It’s unique to Okay. I.E. you won’t find 33710 stamped on Center industries mags. Center’s cage code is 6P199. General Stamping’s code is 90435, etc.
Brownells make there own mags and they are stamped Brownells…
