I’d been toying around with building a semi light weight rifle to use for 3 gun matches this year. Nothing serious, just a nice easy handling rifle.
After sorting through the parts box, a call to Brownells and a little input from a friend I came up with this:
LMT 14.5" upper with a light weight profile barrel and a permanently attached vortex. MI rifle length tube and a YHM two piece gas block. I’m not to thrilled about the two piece block but I didn’t have to many options. Time will tell.
Dropped it on a rebuilt Rock lower with a MOE stock.
The rifle swings real nice. I’m gonna drop a mini red dot on it and see how I like it. The neat thing is I can drop just about any sighting system I want on it. EOtech with a 3x mag, 1-4 variable, or ???
Looking forward to warmer weather and getting back to the range.
Nice rifle! I built a similar rifle for 3-gun with a 14.5" barrel and I’ve been very happy with it out at the range Your handguard looks really long! I’ve got a 13" Vtac Extreme on mine and I thought it looked long haha.
Say, who makes the front QD sling attachment you’ve got on yours? What kind of wrap is that you have on the front handguard? Do you think it will move and twist any on you with use?
16in SS410 BCM Middy
Troy TRX Extreme 13in
Giessle(sp?) SD3G trigger
Burris XTR 1-4x24
LaRue SPR 104 Mount
BattleComp 1.0(soon to switch to a Surefire MB556K though)
A2 Stock - debating on switching to a A5 with ACS at some point
Shooting 75gr Hornady BTHP Match Bullets at 2550fps(playing with other weights and types currently).
I wanted the handguard as long as possible. I like to get my support hand way out. It’s also nice to throw up on a barricade for support.
The QD mount is from MI made specifically for that rail. The wrap is just black paracord. It’s wrapped tight and then I shrunk it. It’s not going anywhere. I tried several different fore grips and ended up liking the plain rail.
jwfuhrman - Why are you switching from the battlecomp to the surefire brake? I havn’t tried the Shurefire, but I’ve got a battlecomp on my 14.5 and I love it, doesn’t move at all.
wedgehead30 - You’ve certainly got as long a handguard as you can get, haha. It almost looks like the Vortex would start venting gas under the handguard! When I got my 13" rail on I liked the look but almost thought it was too long as I can’t get my hand to the end of it to use it all, but it will get used more around baracades and tables.
Thanks for the info on the QD mount, I guess it would have to be specifically for that rail. VTAC makes one for mine as well, but they want like $45 for it… call me cheap, but that seems like a lot for a sling mount.
Ah, I can see it being paracord now. At first it looked like an athletic wrap or something like that in the pictures. That’s not a bad idea. I’ve been starting to think of adding some kind of grip marker to allow for a more consistant grasp each time… nice touch.
While the BattleComp 1.0 works great, this particular rifle likes the MB556K better. That’s what I had on it originally, and put a BC1.0 on to try out. Shoots good as is, but Ive got another gun wanting a BC.
In addition to being a regular competitor I’m also a frequent match director. So I write some of my stages as low/no light. I also will use the rifle for some of the local fun stuff including night shoots.
My vortex is pinned, otherwise I would. I used a bunch of stuff I had on hand, except for the rail. I just tailored the rail to the barrel I had. If I was going full bore I would have done it differently. But it’s kind of a Frankengun.
Just picked up a Primary Arms micro dot with a riser for next to nothing. Gonna give it a try and see how I like it. I’m guessing I will and then be kicking myself in the ass for not getting one of the cheap Aimpoints from Midway.
Yeah, I’m a little concerned about that. I might have gotten a little carried away with the length of the handguard. I’ll find out this weekend when I take her out for a trial run. It should be interesting…I just wish it wasn’t so damn cold.
I did the same thing and it came today I’ve had chinese imitations before and this one appears to have the same style of adjustment knobs and dark greenish glass, but then again my burris XT-135 has a fairly dark green tint to it as well. I bought the QD mount from them as well and it seems to be a little high with the Magpul sights. It doesn’t really lower 1/3 cowitness, it’s more like bottom of the barrel barely see the sights and it seems like the dot gets dimmer down at the bottom as well… good thing it’s going on my .22LR. I do wish I had gotten the Aimpoint from Midway when they had them, was a screamin deal. I’ve even got some duracoat sitting in the hobby closet too… kickin myself right now… I’m actually thinking about using the original mount and putting the PA micro on my 10/22. Like I said it’s a bit high on the AR with the QD mount and it’s a tiny tube, tho I’m sure I could get used to it with some practice.
Looking good on the build. My 2 cents (which is worth even less in todays economy) would be to go with a 1x4 like a trijicon TR24 (I like the german no 4 amber dot but thats personal preference), a Burris XTR 1x4, or even check out the new Nikon M-223 1x4. I think it is a better option in case you ever shoot at ranges past 200+ yards.
New to the forum, I would really like to get involved with 3 gun this year. However, had some trouble getting pointed in the right direction. Do not know a lot of people who shoot around here (moved here in '08). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Nice looking gun but I would remove the flash hider and install a good comp like the JKC Titan. Remove the sights and flashlight and install a good 1-4,6,8 variable scope with good day light illumination and a bullet drop compensator.
Pat
lmk if ya wanna shoot some sunday
'im liking those steel tgts.
Dude, I would love to do some blasting on Sunday. But I gotta work, pulling the OT to pay for this summers ammo and the kid’s too. But I’ll hit you up when I get one off. We need to catch a gun show too.
Nice build brother, can’t wait to outshoot ya this spring:D
Now that’s some funny shit right there. Keep telling yourself you can outshoot me and maybe it will happen…err NOT.:haha:

I’m liking them too. I’m leaning towards buying a bunch of half size IDPA plates and setting up a permanent steel rifle range.
Already planning matches for spring. First match is gonna be a “Kalashnikov Klassic” AK only match. Hopefully I’ll have a PKM as the bonus stage. You feed it, you shoot it.
Did I mention the permanent, rifle grade, shoot house…
