My form 4 was just approved for an AAC Element 2. I’m waiting on a few things to get cleared up before I take possession of it but I’d like to go ahead and start looking for a second suppressor. I bought the Element 2 so I could shoot in my backyard without pissing off the neighbors. I have a safe place to shoot but anything more than a magazine or two gets the their attention. We’ve shot .22lr though a buddy’s Element 2 from a Ruger 22/45 plenty of times here though and it’s perfect.
So now I am looking to get a .45 or 7.62 can. The .45 would go on a Springfield Range Officer and Glock 19. And the 7.62 would go on a LRB M25/M14 and Noveske/ BCM 16" middy. Would one of these larger caliber suppressors be quiet enough to shoot at my house or about as quiet as the Element 2? Also any suggestions for my particular firearms. My local gun stores carry most major brand, AAC, SilencerCo, Surefire, etc. Is a 16" barrel too long for a suppressor?
What Koshinn said, centerfire rifles are loud, with or without a can. Pistol calibers are going to be the quietest. If that is what you are going for, the .45 can should work the best for you. I would recommend the SWR Octane 45 HD. Easy to change out pistons to mount on various thread pitches and sizes, great performance, great customer service, and great pricing. The Tirant from AAC is another good option. Im just a big SWR/SilencerCo fan boy. If you go the 762 route, any of those brands you mentioned make a very good can, buy the one with the price and mounting system that appeals to you. Personally I like Surefire for the mounting system, but you cant go wrong with any of the brands you listed.
45 can: you will be shooting subsonic and be backyard quiet. It would also work for 300 blackout (subsonic only!). A AAC Handi rifle is a blast shooting in the back yard.
762 can: shooting supersonic ammo willl not be backyard quiet in my opinion. For the M14 (I too have an LRB arms, M25 18" tanker) you will need the Gemtech thread adapter as most companies do not sell QD muzzle devices in m14 threads. You may also need a Schuster gas plug.
So, what do you think you want to shoot more. Handgun in the backyard? Or 762 can that you could use subsonic in the backyard and supers at the range etc. ?
ABSOLUTELY, I shoot in my backyard with suppressed .22 and suppressed center fire rifles. Also routinely shoot an unsuppressed full auto belt- fed 1919A4 in my backyard for the past 2 years. Never had a complaint about any of them.
If the neighbors get upset over an unsuppressed .22 then you will have complaints for shooting suppressed supersonic centerfire- too noisy. You can always shoot centerfire subsonics.
I predict you will get both cans eventually, pick the one you will enjoy the most.
For example, I live in the suburbs surrounded by elderly New York City transplants. While legal, shooting anything around here is a surefire bet to have the LEOs roll up guns hot. If the OP’s neighbors “take notice” when he’s shooting a .22, than anything other than suppressed subsonic pistol ammo is going to elicit the same reaction.
I don’t have access to a dB reader, but I would bet money that suppressed 7.62 is louder than unsuppressed .22LR.
Thanks guys. I will probably go for the .45 can as it seems a rifle would be too much. And as far as shooting area. There is 15 acres to shoot on behind my house. But there are newer subdivisions with 100+ houses less than a quarter mile down the road, so it’s not one particular neighbor but potentially many. About 10 years ago when the subdivisions were being built we used to shoot clays behind the house and always ended up with the cops there and I would rather not deal with that anymore than I have too.
