.223 with rem 6.5 primer

Okay, I under stand some people won’t use it with a Ar15 but I couldn’t find anyone who would buy my box(1000) or primers. I reloaded a few hundred with the rem 7.5’s but I don’t want to just throw the 6.5’s away. Anyway, I loaded 10 rounds with the 6.5’s and ran them through the ar15. I don’s see any difference with the look of the dent made from the firing pin then with the 7.5’s. Plus, the 6.5’s didn’t slam fire. I used the 6.5’s in new cases though so maybe not having the carbon build up has made a bit of difference in not resulting in a slam fire but, I don’t know. Anyways, I have loaded about 40 rounds using the 6.5 so I hope that it will be okay what do You guys think. Is this taking a huge risk? The primers are in line with what the Hornady reload book says, they use wsr If i remember all the letters correctly, both for .223 and their 5.56 rounds thx robert

keep them a mild 223 round… I have some I will be using as well…

Can’t speak directly to the 6.5s, but for years I used CCI #400 and WSR primers in loads for my AR without a problem. It wasn’t until I got a chrono and discovered that the 7.5s gave more consistent results with my loads (YMMV) that I switched. Later I changed to Wolf for the same reason.

I have been involved in competitive rifle shooting for nearly 20 years and have yet to hear someone complain of slam fires with 6.5 primers or witness any such problems. Not saying it couldn’t happen, just I haven’t seen it or met anyone else that has.

As always, keep the muzzle pointed downrange when chambering a round, and don’t function test with live ammo outside of a range.

I primed a bunch of .223 brass with these primers and had no idea. I asked for Small Rifle primers in the Dillon show room, and the lady gave me 6 1/2s.

It was a long time before I read on Barfcom that they’re not for .223. I went and read the box, and OOPS! My loads are pretty mild, and I’ve never had a problem with them.

Now that I know, I’m using them for 9mm in my glock. They work great for pistol ammo.

I wouldn’t use them. I got them accidentally once not too long ago, and flattened and cratered primers was the result. I am using them up for 9mm rounds as well.

thx, I was new to .223 reloading so when I asked for the small rifle primers for it that is what I was given. I tried to give them back they of course said no. so I bought the 7.5’s. I tried to see them then someone suggested that I load up some and cycle it through my Ar. It leaves a dent but it doesn’t look any difference then the 7.5. well, I reloaded them in new cases so there was no carbon buildup in the primer pocket so hopefully that means that the primer is seated a little deeper, lol. Anyone want to buy 800 primers hehehe. If I had these during the primer shortage I could have sold them for a 100$ just kidding.:stop:

I’m not new to loading, and the same thing happened to me.

Stupid REMINGTON and their gay numbering system.

I ruined a bolt on an Armalite some years back using 6.5’s in full power .223’s. They are for rounds in the 40,000 psi range. The primers pierced and destroyed the bolt face around the firing pin hole. Be careful.

yikes, that is scary thx

I wouldn’t use them either, this link shows a comparison of several primers. http://www.jamescalhoon.com/primers_and_pressure.php

The issue is two-fold, first thay can pierce under full pressure loads and second the first 999 may not slam fire but it only takes one. My dad has a hole in his truck from unloading an older Rem 700 (safety/trigger issue). Been unloaded a bazillion times until then.

I shot some ground squirrels with them last week and the performed great but I was nervous about using them. I just don’t want to through them(rem 6.5)away. Especially since I still have 800. I won’t buy them again that is for sure.

What else can i use them for? Can I use them for perhaps in the .357 mag? I see that some are using them for there 9mm?

I’d use them for anything small pistol. If you’re 357s are hot loads, you might play it safe and back the charge off a touch.

I use them interchangeably in 9mm with no problems at all.

As long as your pistol firing pin has enough horsepower ( 6.5’s might be harder than standard pistol primers). .357 mag operates in the 35,000 psi range…pressure shouldn’t be a problem.

I’ve had good luck with the Glock G17 and these primers.

I’ve even tried Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primers, but those would fail to fire about 1 or 2 percent of the time.

My .357 is a ruger wheel gun. I use h110 powder, I do have my loads pretty hot. So, If I go back to my hornady book I could use the lighter charge with these primers? Is the reason that I have to lighten my powder load because maybe the primers are more explosive then the cci .357 primers?. Will they even fit, if i can use these primers any thing I need to watch out for when using them? If can use these primers safely then I won’t even try to use them for my .223 light loads anymore.

I have shot several thousand rounds through my Colt AR with Rem 6.5 primers without issue, but because of Tom’s experience quoted above and others describing the same thing, I’ve switched to a different primer.

If you can use them up in a pistol load, that’s what I would do. Otherwise, you’re taking a chance on bolt face erosion.
