22 with aperture sights bolt or single shot?

Not wanting to hijack the other 22 thread… I’m looking for a 22 for my 10 yr old nephews that is either bolt action or single shot and comes with or can easily be retrofitted with an aperture sight. Any suggestions? Obviously it needs to be small for 10 year olds.

I know you said bolt or single shot, and I don’t want to get off topic, but I wanted to plug the longest continuously manufactured shoulder firearm in the world… the Marlin 39. Add a Williams FP-39 peep sight and you have 22 lr lever action perfection.

The only downside is that it isn’t a cheap rifle for a kid, but it is one that he should keep and treasure for his lifetime.

That was my first 22… unfortunately it was stolen.

I just figured someone made one. I noticed Contender had one in single shot that is very small an light, but not sure how adjustable the sights are. I just want the boys to start out with an aperture sight if possible and I want it to be light enough that they will carry it all over the ranch. I can’t believe there isn’t a bolt gun like that. My freinds have all bought CZ trainer bolt guns but they are larger than I’d like.

M4Fundi,

Check-out; Henry Arms, Chipmunk, Savage, and Marlin.

If you peruse their online catalogs, you should find several different models. I believe the two smallest models are the Chipmunk and the Henry Youth models.

Of all the models, I would lean towards the Marlin first and foremost because it gives alot of bang for the buck. I have read a few positive reviews about the Henry as well (take with a grain of salt). Although, you already mentioned the CZ is too long, but they really make the best rimfires (quality wise for under $500) out there.

Happy Holidays,

P.S. You may want to stroll over rimfirecentral.com because it is quite likely there are reviews/ information on all of these.

Thanks

I have a friend with a single shot bolt gun that his son learned on. I swear he can go through a 500+ bulk pack ONE AT A TIME while we are out shooting. I think I am going to end up buying it from him when my kids are old enough, but I have a pair of Winchester 190 for the step after that (I have 2 year old twins).
