.22 and 12Ga

We don’t have a general firearms discussion section here so I figured I’d put this thread here.

While I enjoy my AR’s and 9mm pistols as guns for doing work if needed, I think my most enjoyable shooting times are with .22’s and 12Ga shotguns. The .22 is cheap, quiet and has low recoil. The 12Ga is also pretty cheap and flying clays are tons of fun to break.

Anyone else feel the same or different?

Most of my shooting involves these 2.

Hunting crows on the wing and varmint control around the house.

So I would say that this is pretty true for me too.

While I wouldn’t like it, if limited to only these to types of rifles, I could get most all the enjoyment and use out of firearms I have now.

Other than sitting around fondling my SHTF guns in my Mom’s basement.

(For the record, neither my house, nor my Mom’s has a basement.)

Read an article a few years ago where one of the gun writers was reviewing some .22 rifle. Said something to the effect of:

“While everyone is eager to go out and blast away at the newest and largest caliber, most of us jump at the chance to sit around for an afternoon and waste old cans and bottles with a box of .22. And not have a sore shoulder the next day.”

When it comes down to it, it’s hard to beat a lazy afternoon with your favorite .22 plinking at random objects with friends or family.

Now if some .22 ammo started hitting the shelves we’d be set.

I don’t plink much anymore. I go out to the range with the purpose or working on skill building drills. I shoot .22 long rifles as understudy guns for my competition guns and duty guns. I wish I had more time to just plink and relax but have not had that much lately.

Skeet and trap shooting with a 12ga auto is fun, but 22lr shooting get’s old pretty fast for me. I do shoot 22’s some mostly when my daughter, the sons GF and/or wife want to shoot. I’m actually quite fond of my M&P 15/22 and Ruger target pistols and I have plenty of ammo. They just don’t hit my switch like 9mm, 45’s, 5.56, 300AAC, etc…

.22s I seem to recall those things. Weren’t they rim fire or something like that?!?

LOL… Something like that!

Yeah, yeah, funny guys!

Still, I think it’s the variety of ammo and loads available that also adds to the enjoyment of the 12ga and .22lr.

I’ve been getting into 12ga. more and more. I picked an 870 up for cheap a few months ago, and I’ve been working on it as I’ve learned more about what I can do with it, and how I want to use it.

At least I can find ammo for it.

I think so if I can recall…

Posted this awhile back on site discussion thread section…but got no replies:

[i]Consideration for a .22 and below forum thread:

Greetings all,

I enjoy the 5.56 and above forum thread. Now the opposite, the little guys.

Have you considered a .22 caliber and below section to the forum?

Rimfire’s have seen a resurgence recently with ammo prices, and while finding .22lr ammo is difficult these days, there will always be an interest in rimfires.

Increasingly, first time gun buyers are buying .22’s and these new shooters are fundamental for the future foundation of 2A rights. The technical focus of M4 could help these new gun owners become “the next generation” of 2A champions.

Perhaps .22 and below including .17 etc…Heck who doesn’t own a .22?

Mods, Sr. members, I appreciate your consideration.

I agree with ASH 556, not many challenges, both fun and serious can’t be handled with a 12g or .22.

I have sold all my toys except 22 lr. and 12 ga. They are the most fun and that is why I shoot.

I’m in this boat. Feels no different then shooting my pellet gun I grew up with.

My grandfather’s Ithaca side by side 20 gauge was passed down to me after he passed in 2008. That has always been a great gun and has made me quite fond of the round. Have ALOT of found memories w/myself and Pop with that Ithaca. I decimated the local squirrel and rabbit population many times over in the woods behind my g-parents’ house with the 20 gauge and my .22 rifle.

Still enjoy shooting it.
