Ok, so I want to build an upper in .204 to use calling coyotes, foxes and cats. I have an idea in my mind of what I want for parts, and what I want the outcome to look like. My problem is this: I want to use the Shilen Match Bull barrel from MidwayUSA, which comes 24" and I’m pretty positive has a rifle-length gas system. I want to cut it as short as possible, I was planning on 17", and having a deeply recessed target crown. I don’t care how much velocity I lose, I’m going to be shooting 300 yards max, and that’s a pretty slim chance. Shots will more than likely be less than 50 yards. I read on here somewhere that a rifle length gas system might not be reliable with a barrel less than 18". Would a 17" barrel cause me problems? I know it’ll be loud, but I can’t imagine that it will be louder than my 16" 5.56 w/ FSC556. Also, I’m going to use my lower from my DDM4, until I can build one specifically for the 204. Will I have to use a different buffer(I currently have an “H” buffer)?
