I found a good deal on a used 20 moa scope base and was wondering if there are any disadvantages of using this mount if I don’t need it? I don’t usually shot past 300 yards.
As long as your optic has more than 20 moa of adjustment you’ll be good.
I have a zeiss 3.5-10 I searched and cant seem to find how much adjustment it has. It only has a 1 inch tube.
I should have been more clear. You need 40moa total in scope: 20 down, 20 up.
A 1 inch tube will have that.
To verify your total:
Run elevation all the way up. Then turn it all the way down while counting clicks. When it bottoms divide your clicks by value of adjustment. If you had 200 clicks on a 1/4 MOA scope you would have 50 total MOA. Run elevation back up 1/2 of your counted clicks to re-center.
You can center windage first to get an exact number.
A 20 MOA scope base for a 5.56 AR15 never shot beyond 300 yards?
Useless.
the 5.56 is going to run out of steam long before you need a base like that.

My mistake. I read this as “Disadvantages?” and “Will it work?”. To which my answers are “None” and “yes” respectively.
I wouldn’t say it is pointless or useless either. Some people prefer running sloped bases, even on short range rigs, so it’s impossible to dial below their zero a full revolution.
I know we are spoiled with zero stops and what not nowadays but preferences are preferences.
You don’t need it. In fact, I would advise against a 20 MOA base for your purposes.
Such bases are intended for rifles that will shoot at ranges beyond the adjustment capacity of the optic. While it may not affect the accuracy of your scope/rifle combination, it may affect the image that your scope produces. Riflescopes are designed to give the best image quality when the optical elements are mechanically centered through the scope (mechanical zero). Any deviation from this optical center introduces errors into the image. How big an error is a matter of glass quality and manufacturer, and most probably will not notice the difference (especially on high end scopes). But, regardless, it still happens.
A 20 MOA base forces you to introduce misalignment. Why do that unless it’s something you really need?
