I’m looking for a 20 inch government profile barrel assembly with a 1 in 7 twist in 5.56mm, that’s close to military grade specs as possible. I would prefer to buy the barrel non stripped, with F marked sight base and M4 feed ramps pre-installed.
I would get the BCM upper without a second thought, for your desired features.
Bushmaster does make (or has recently made) the same configuration, but you would be paying for and getting an iffy bolt carrier group, and hoping that the front sight base is not canted. You won’t be worrying about assembly or materials with the BCM, and you won’t be worrying about the carrier group if you get a BCM, DD, LMT, or other high quality carrier group (I mention the others because the BCM groups are so often out of stock).
That’s over $300 and a lot of hassle and you need to supply the receiver, delta ring assembly, flash hider, sling loop, etc. To me the $399 fully assembled BCM upper looks like a better deal.
I would be happy to hear of less expensive options, but I haven’t seen any if you want a properly installed, pinned FSB. When BCM had the Sabre 20" barrel with an installed FSB it was $379 for just a barrel and FSB:
M4 feed ramps may not be needed, but they don’t hurt. Some 20in have them some do not. Main reason they were not invented before the M4 was because the riffle pulse is not as violent so the mags could feed them into the regular riffle design. The M4 feed ramps in my opinion help the riffle too.
Well I never thought of that (angle change in relation to scraping the bullet) but I guess that could be a concern. But if this were an issue, wouldn’t it be an issue on all weapons with M4 ramps? Seems to be everyone has moved to those for some reason.
Please use the ORANGE search button. There is alot of information posted here about feedramps. The short answer is that M16 rifles don’t need it. The M4 does.
I pulled one of the 20" barrels from a BCM upper and used the flat top receiver for another project.
Or check the link below for a “FN Original M16-A2 Barrel Grade A, 1 in 7 twist.(Excellent Condition)”, but it probably won’t have the F marked front sight.
