2 obvious 6.8 questions?

Hey guys, I know this is already on here, but I have been SERIOUSLY counsidering a 6.8 as a deer (white tail) rifle. 1) Will 6.8 ammo just be a fad? Will it be impossible to find in say 3-5 years? 2) Will the 6.8 be an effective round for say a 220 pound buck out to 200-250 yards max?

I am thinking of this set-up.
a) Stag arms 16" 6.8 rifle, but with the non-collapsable stock. (Wish they made a 20" version and I think the Hunter model looks ugly)
b) Trijicon Acog 4x scope
c) Surefire M500 weaponlight

Any thoughts would be appreciated before I drop 2 Gs on this project.

I am not sure what makes your questions “obvious” but I am sure that you’ll find the answers very quickly and easily over on 68Forums.com.

1 The 6.8 will be around. Not likely it will ever be on the shelf of every Bob’s gun n tackle, but it isn’t hard to order it. I think it’s actually been picking up speed on the hunting side for the last few years.

3 There is not a lot of velocity going from 16" to 20" so I’d say stick with the handy carbine.

I’ve been on the fence about getting a separate 6.8 upper, and I have some of the same concerns listed above.

Has BCM announced any plans to make 6.8 uppers and bolts? That might push me over the edge.

If you have a LMT MRP then you could get a 6.8 barrel. I’m thinking about doing the same for deer. Ammo source Silver State Ammo.

Palmetto State Armory was just selling a complete 6.8 Stag upper and 4 or 5 CP mags for $550. Its the ammo prices that stink.

I can get all flavors of Hornady for $20.99 per 20. I found a company selling SSA bulk for $15 a box but that disappeared and its now $17-18.

…now the fancy 77gr 5.56 OTM ammo doesn’t look so bad. I am mulling over reloading.

I’ve been watching it a couple years. Growth has been continuous and strong. I’ve heard that it outsells all the other AR-15 variants together. No way it’s going away or even dropping into the “reload only” class.

Beautiful round for that, even out to 300 yards.

I see the 6.8 gaining in popularity slowly but steadily, I bought a Stag 5 last year and am very happy with it, it has the Spec II Chamber and the more desirable 1/11 twist. Finding ammo for it locally is getting a bit difficult lately so I am guessing I am no longer the only person that has moved up to the 6.8. I have had a lot of people tell me it would make a great deer rifle, it’s lightweight and very handy with the 16" barrel, and from the research I have done the 16" barrel is good enough and that anymore length is really not neccasary. I have tried several different brands of ammo, Barrett, Remington (both MC and OTM) as well as BVAC and all ran well out of my rifle. I can also recomend the C-Products 25 rd magazines, they ran flawlessly in my rifle too. on an odd note, one of my magazines came from C-Products with a 556 follower in a 6.8 body and still ran with the 556 follower.
