1911 only guy just got a HK 45

Picked one up yesterday at the range I belong too.
I had one of my Baers with me P2 1 1/2" and doing 25 yard slow fire trying to put rounds in the same hole.
I am an accuracy freak and tend to do more slow fire 25 yard to 50 yard shooting.
Well I wanted something for home and carry beside a 1911 and my protection dogs.
I have big hands and can carry a Gov 1911 very easy and don’t like smaller guns and the Hk fells like a 1911.
So I got it and went back to the range with some 230 grain ball and
some 230 grain jhp they had on sale.
The muzzle flip was a little more than my 1911’s but not bad for a Polymer 45.
I took a few shots at 21 feet and off to the 25 yard line as always.
My wife went shooting ( she goes every now and than)
I thought you just wanted a good carry gun and you where not going to worry about shooting it at 25 or 50 yards.
Man do I like this HK 45 it’s a shooter for sure …
Best of both for me a Very Reliable pistol that I can enjoy like my 1911’s at 25 yards.

Need some info I know reloads are a NO NO but does anyone shoot them in there HK 45.
I reload
Nozler 185 grain JHP
4.3 Clays
Winchester Large Pistol Primers
Starline Brass
Winchester Brass
Thanks for any info.

It’s not that reloads are bad by themselves for an HK45 , it’s just that led bullets specifically are a bad idea. The way the pistol if rifled (it’s called polygonal rifling, Glocks use it too) causes excessive lead buildup and potentially could cause a KB.
So, you can shoot as many reloads as you want, just make sure your bullets are jacketed.

Thanks for the info !!!

So I should be all right …

Actually that a bit of a myth…Glocks have a problem with lead bullets, and that’s because of way the bullets transition into the bore, scraping off lead when they do, this causes lead to build up and has been known to cause problems. HK’s on the other hand, have a nice bevel at the start of the rifling, So lead bullets transition into the rifling without problems, I have a P-2000 (9mm) I’ve put a couple thousand lead bullets through it, with no problems, I’d also add in the manual that came with my P-2000, unlike Glock manuals, there in no mention of not using exposed lead bullets. The problem is, folks hear of the problems with Glock polygonal bores and lead bullets, and assume that applies to ALL polygonal bores. It dosen’t. I would’nt hesitate to use lead in a HK 45…

I’ve an HK45 with Light LEM, and it is a spectacular shooter. I don’t shoot it much, but when I do, it’s a pure tack driver…

I have a HK45C and a P30S on order.
2 weeks and counting.
Its going to be a long 2 weeks…

i was a long time 1911 shooter too for 45’s but also just bought a HK 45 expert. can’t wait to get some trigger time on it when i get home. also probably picking up a glock full size 45 sometime soon as well, heard good things. although nothing will replace the 1911 for the soft spot in my heart

I have the same sentiments, as well, to a certain extent. Being a Taurus 24/7 Pro junkie (cheap, easy to dehorn, easy to work on, good ergonomics, good to the hand, etc.), I had been hard headed for a long time in that I did not want to pay the price for the HK 45 when I could get a good 1911 for a little more. But, as I finally explored the idea (have been for some time) and took the time to really handle one, along with the reputation (pretty much undisputed), DA/SA, higher rd. ct., and 20,000 rd. expected service life, I actually found myself trying to justify getting one. With the price of the two 1911’s I have now (one more $$$ that the other), I could easily have two HK 45’s for the same coin. I actually like the HK 45 so well that I am going to sell both of the 1911’s and replace with HK’s. The only things I feel like I am sacrificing are the great triggers of the 1911’s, but I am sure someone here will direct me down that path when the time comes. I will add that the pistol that I got to spend some time with was wonderfully accurate and very controllable. I believe it is a complete package.

I have the G21 and though it is a good gun (emphasis on the good), it forces you to push your wrist forward/down a bit more to shoot. It is not uncomfortable, but to me, I can tell it is a considerable difference.

Wow, I did not know that. Thanks for the info! I actually looked at my USP manual after reading your post and low an behold, their is no warning against lead bullets, moreover my rifling appears to be beveled too! The amount of great information on this site never ceases to amaze me.:thank_you2:

Go over to Hkpro forums and do a search on this topic, There will be the usual arguing, but sifting through that, you’ll find some nuggets of info, There several guys there who compete (IDPA etc,) and that’s all they shoot is cast lead bullets…with no problems. The key to using them is keeping the velocitys lower, and use a bullet of proper hardness, check out www.missouribullet.com in their “tech” section, it’ll explain in detail, the reasoning for different bullet hardnesses, as well as provide a method of figuring how hard a bullet should be.
