Utah highway patrol arrested a guy down near Kanab. They say he fled and was travelling between 150-170 during pursuit.
In a Jetta.
Ain’t no way a Jetta is hitting that velocity short of an air drop.

Turbo model Chipped to the edge of its life?
The Jetta has a model that comes with the turbo 2.0 out of the GTI. That motor can make some serious power with not a whole lot of mods. Hell just a tune can get them to around 300hp and 350tq.
Looked around real quick and saw a video of a guy doing 160mph in a tuned Jetta GLI and was tach at 4900 rpm. Motor still had another 1500 RPM to redline.
A bigger turbo GLI I think would hit 170 on a long freeway.
I hit just shy of 160 in my tuned 2006 WRX measured by gps. That thing only made 325 hp and 400tq at the motor.
Yep, definitely possible. I have a friend who had one that would run with my E55. And during an air drop, their terminal velocity is something like 124mph.
Just kidding, I don’t really know the terminal velocity of a Jetta, but they can be made VERY fast.
A 2020 Jetta has a drag coefficient of 0.27. That’s darn good. The only other factor of going that fast is horsepower. I’m not sure how much it would take to go ~170 mph (could be roughly calculated based on the Cd and frontal area) but crank up the boost, tune, and supporting mods and it’ll get you there. If I had to guess I’d say it takes less than 500 horsepower to achieve
Possible for sure. Boost makes almost anything possible.
Multiple bolt on turbo kits will get you 350 easy. If you go with a more extreme turbo and associated cooling, fuel system work and exhaust, it would be easy to well exceed that.
New Dimensions used to make a turbo kit for the VR6 motor that made over 600 horsepower on pump gas. We built a 1.8T that hit 274 hp on the dyno without going too crazy so I think it would be possible with enough $$$ and tuning.
I have a company car. GMC Acadia and it shows 160 mph. I thought BS, then took my foot off gas at 120. You never know.
PB
100% possible. There are companies that rent out modded jettas for Nurburgring tourist runs. They are way faster than you would think.
Well damn. As a former “car guy” I should have known better. But… it’s a Jetta! Who knew?
I have unverified, unofficial, and non-detailed “intel” that the car in impound is indeed a tricked out, modified VW Jetta.
I am by very familiar with that particular stretch of two lane blacktop. I may have “slightly” exceeded the posted limit there myself a few times, accidental-like.
It’s been improved a bit lately, and they are currently widening it out in places. Still not a place I would have chosen for this kind of excitement.
I wonder how interesting that got after the spike strip?
Ha, yeah, there are some very unlikely sleepers running around, wagons and SUVs that will smack down liter bikes. I personally know of an MB sedan that popped off an 11 second quarter with 4 big goons in it and the crowd was silent when it pulled on the wheelie making Monte Carlo at the track. I also know of several 10 second wagons out there pushing 800+ hp.
And with regard to the spike strips, the leaks aren’t usually blow-out inducing, and a slow gradual leak on likely 18-20” low profile tires are really more pucker factor than crash inducing.
I had my wife’s Nissan Juke over 130 for a stretch coming back from a trip to Dallas and that was a bone stock 1.6 liter turbo. Pretty sure I could’ve pushed it a little further. I don’t have any doubts about a Jetta hitting over 150.
I can run low to mid 9s on a liter bike with <$200 worth of suspension mods, on a stock tire, pump gas, no spray. Definitely under the 11s, stock. Trap speed 150mph+. When I raced Super Sixes, low to mid 10s on a somewhat stock 600 with specc’d fuel. If something in the 10s is smacking down a liter bike, the rider doesn’t know he’s in a race, or he’s really, really fat.
A Jetta is pretty cheap and easy to mod to almost 500hp on pump gas.
This was my last business, we modded VW, Audi and BMW.
I ‘thought’ the one son was going to be a ‘winner’ when I got him up to an alcohol motor by the age of 7 but…

When he heard me talking about spraying it a ‘little’ bit he wussed out and refused to ride it any more if I did.
In hindsight - That was the first red flag that he was turning gay. ![]()
The wonderful computer in my work truck will let me do 100 and no more.
Pisses me off every time I think about it…
I had my stock 2000 Jetta VR6 to 140mph
Ops not 1999
Kinda of topic, but a funny story. When I was in high school I had a buddy with a diesel Jetta, I think it might have been a ‘89. Well, one winter we had a bad ice storm and his car was stuck in his parents driveway. We couldn’t get it to move. He had it in 5th gear doing 115mph sitting still. The tire’s finally heated up enough to melt through the ice. We popped a wheelie about 4’ off the ground! We laughed our asses off.
