16" Lightweight Midlength General Purpose Build

Nice rifle. Nice to see one without a lot of crap hanging off of it.

I don’t normally like to respond to the Custom Build threads, but your post stands out from the rest, due to proper sentence structure and spelling, as well as the fact that you provided excellent information as to what parts you used, and why you used them.

As far as your rifle goes, I approve!

I agree. Well thought out, well executed, and articulated well. That is what custom is all about. Excellent.

Haha, thanks guys. I’ve spent a lot of time and money trying different things on AR15’s (not nearly as much experience as some here though), so I think it’s nice to get some insight into what other people are doing and why. I plan to make another post in here about my dedicated HD AR15 I mentioned when I get a chance…just to show some of the thought process behind it.

Honestly, it seems like a great build. I wish more guys took this approach. Get simple functional parts at a good price.

Most folks will never need a heavy bbl. For rear sights a simple fixed A1 is the way to go. Even with RDS you still should aim your gun. The fundamentals still apply. Mid-gas is pretty much the standard now.

My only additional recommendation is to get a good sling like the Vickers or VTac, and learn how to use it.

 See a common thought here?

I really need to post recent pics of my 16" LW BFH middy…

Now if the skill to use it could appear, just like that

Cool post, and nice looking AR. I wanted to know if you purchased an Aervoe Camo Kit and if not, then what colors did you pick?

Great job! This is what a new build thread should look like! Very nicely done, I hope you start a trend.

Thanks! I did not purchase a kit, I just picked up a few colors from Brownells. I don’t know the colors off the top of my head, but I’ll find out and post here. To be honest, a couple colors weren’t quite what I expected and the end result isn’t quite what I wanted, but it’s good enough. My mistake was using too dark a color for the base and then putting too much OD green mist on top of everything.

Thanks! I’ve learned a lot reading on this site, so just giving a little back. I see a lot of people post what they build/use, but I’m always curious to know why they select the parts that they do.

Absolutely spot-on. Well done!

Great carbine! You used all quality components and your carbine has everything that you need in a fighting carbine and nothing that you don’t.

Awesome build. I especially like the paint job. If you could provide a tutorial that’d be fantastic! It looks perfect.

GREAT post. This should be stickied and used as an example if what a custom build post should look like.

Thanks guys. I forgot to post the paint colors, here they are:

#999 EARTH BROWN CAMO PAINT
#968 FIELD DRAB CAMO PAINT
987A OLIVE DRAB CAMO PAINT
#979 FOREST GREEN CAMO PAINT

I used the earth brown as a base. Then I added spots of field drab and forest green. I just used a piece of paper with random shapes cut out as a mask for this. Last, I misted olive drab over it all. It’s basically the Pat Rogers paint method (I know it’s posted on lightfighter, not sure where else) with different colors.

It’s a very subdued pattern because the base color is kind of dark and I put too much olive drab mist on. I’d also note that the earth brown and field drab colors were substantially different from what I expected. In the end, it doesn’t matter…it’s good enough and I’m just tired of solid black rifles anyway.

ETA: The pmag in the original post is painted the same way, except it was fde and I didn’t use the earth brown base. So you can see a bit of the difference the lighter base color makes.

Awesome, thanks for that.

yeah that rifle is just about right…

light, optic, backup sights, done.
