Has anyone done that or did they just get a 14.5" barrel? I’ve got a carbine that I want to cut down after I NFA the lower. Pros and cons if there are any.

I just had my 16in barrel cut to a 10.5. Send it to ADCO.
How much did it cost and what was the turn around?

$65 for the cut/threading/crowning- If you send whole upper instead of just the barrel then $35 disassemble/reassemble- plus shipping- they got my upper on last friday the 5/7 and i received it back yesterday.
Not to step on your toes here but why even bother NFA’ing a 14.5"? A A2 flashhider adds 1.25" which brings you to 15.75". That’s .25" short of a 16" without a hider or 1.5" short of a 16" with hider. I suppose if you have money to burn and don’t mind the legal hassels then go for it. If you want short I recommend going with a 12.5" instead or if you insist on a 14.5 why not just have a 1.5" or greater flash hider/muzzle brake pinned on and avoid the NFA process.

For a 14.5", a fixed muzzle device to keep it Title 1 can be more attractive.
If you’re going SBR, then 12.5" or shorter. Also, ADCO. YES.
Not stepping on toes. Just trying to make it easier getting out of the car but keeping some of the balistic properties of a longer barrel.

+1 on that as well. Is a 1/4" worth a $200.00 tax stamp?
I done the 11.5 with a Colt SBR.
I also like the 14.5 barrel as well and do not want to weld a FH to the barrel. I just could not pay that much money and only go 1/4".
IMO, I will go 11.5 to 12.5 then later on then get or make a 14.5 upper to run as well.
I know once I get my M16 I am wanting to get 3 or more uppers for it. The 14.5 upper will be one them.
Opinion: The ~1.5" is better managed with more deliberate muzzle control than by going the NFA route. There just isn’t enough gain for my cost:benefit, unless you go 10-12". YMMV.

-What kind of area do you live in or patrol?
-I assume this rifle is for defensive use against the 2-legged kind not including flamingos?
-What is the caliber and ammunition used? Is using a different type of ammunition/caliber possible?
-Where will your weapon be kept(trunk, front seat, back, ect.)?

It won’t make it any easier. For operating in and out of a car, go with a 10.5-11.5. It is just silly to spend the $200 on a tax stamp for a 14.5.
Remember that you might also run into a GP size issue (depending on who made your barrel). 16" carbine guns should have a GP size of around .060. 14.5" barrels are around .063. So there COULD be some short stroking problems.

The only time I can really feel the difference in length between the 14.5" and 16" is if I have a silencer on the end of it.
I don’t think it is worth the $ or hassle for interstate travel (unless it is in addition to a 16" carbine) but if you decide to do it the quality of the barrel you are thinking about cutting down would be a big factor.
Unless your current barrel is a high quality, 1/7, 5.56 chamber the money you would spend to have it cut and threaded would be better off going toward a new barrel with proper specs.
