Remove front sight base and put low profile gas block or cut down front sight base ? anyone have any experiance with this ?
I have a bit of experience with this: Cut down the FSB. This is due to it being pinned from the factory, you know it’ll go back in the exact same place every time, and you don’t have to pay for a lo-profile GB. If you have a dremel it’s easy. Here’s how—I’ve done quite a few of these.
You’re likely starting with a complete rifle. Clear your weapon. Pull BCG/CH out. Then you’ll need to pull the handguards. The process I’m going to show you depicts a FSB with bayonet lug and sling swivel previously removed and cut.
You’ll want to contour the edges of the GB with a small round wheel that you can get for a dremel. They’re about the size of a dime and perhaps 3/16" thick. They’re used in the area above where the barrel goes and creates a teardrop profile of the GB. Make sure on some types of rails that you might have to completely grind off the bayonet lug and sling swivel to fit.
Once you’ve pulled the gas tube and block off, also remove HG cap.
Retorque barrel nut, or put your new rail’s hardware on and torque new barrel nut on. Do it to their FT-LB specification. You’ll need a good torque wrench to do this. I usually get mine in the 50-60FT-LB range.
Install rail over newly chopped FSB/bayo-lug/swivel. Should your rail require a different barrel nut you’ll have to pull the barrel as well. This pictorial was done with a Troy MRF-R rail 12" and a stock barrel nut. you’ll probably also have to pull the delta ring and tension rings off too. Unless you plan on dremeling that off too you’ll need pliers that cause the nose to expand rather than contract when you grip them.
