Interesting casting. Bruckheimer. Could be enjoyable.
I thought Michael Bay would butcher 13 hours, but I felt that turned out very good.
Great book. Hope it’s half as good as the book.
The shooting from the hip on horseback in the trailer might have bugged me
Lol. Yeah, I saw that, shrugged, said “it’s a movie.”
Not sure if they combined the stories of a few A-Teams or if it is about one specific team, but a woman I used to work with’s husband was the XO (warrant) on the first team into Afghanistan. He was a 5th Group guy. In fact, not too long after OEF went down Time magazine did an article on his team and only used first names. Sure as hell, it mentioned the team’s warrant was XXXX, which was his name. I’ve met him before and he was pretty cool. He’s retired now and they no longer live near Ft. Campbell.
I’ll see the movie. I didn’t read the book that this movie was based on but I read the book “First In”. It was written from the viewpoint of the CIA team led by Gary Schroen that was sent to Afghanistan right after 9/11. They were the first Americans to go in, flown in rickety old Russian helicopters. To get ready, they went to REI to buy their cold weather equipment and other needed supplies. Their official knives were Kershaw flippers (didn’t say the exact model), their sidearms were Browning Hi Power (who said HP are antique) and their rifles were AK with folding stocks.
A friend recommended the book and it was a good read.
This. Really hope they don’t butcher it.
That, too, was a good book.
One of my buddies, a fellow corpsman with whom I went to amphib recon school who ended up with first force recon, said the same thing about the post-Oct 7 (when we started bombing Astan) workup: they all went to REI and local sporting goods stores with their GCCs, bought all sorts of OTS gear; mainly GPS, thermal skivvies, Jetboil stoves, etc. If it wasn’t black, they painted it black. We didn’t get to spend government $ on civvy goodies, but if we bought it and it looked remotely “tactical,” leadership turned a blind eye.
Anywho, that, too, would make a great movie (maybe Netflix miniseries??)
Pappabear and I were irritated by that. I won’t go see it in the theater… but I don’t go see anything in the theater anyway.

^I thought it was based on this book. Maybe a combination of both?
No, it’s based on Horse Soldiers. The other, CIA op was going on at the same time.
From what I read, the CIA Jawbreaker team was the first Americans in Afghanistan, therefore the name of the book was “First In”. They established the early connection with the tribal leaders and warlords before the SF teams landed. Then after the SF teams landed, they worked together to kill the talibans.
That is what I understand to be the case also. I don’t think it was a long gap of time between the two though…maybe a few weeks, a month at most?
I really enjoyed “First In” as well, have not read “Horse Soldiers” yet, although it is on my reading list. For those of you who read the book, are they heavily exaggerating the SF/Mujj guys facing antique Russian tanks on horseback part? That seemed like it was most likely very Hollywoodized.
It didn’t take long for the SF to arrive. The CIA teams were in Afghanistan less than two weeks after 9/11 and I believe the SF arrived in early October. I have not read the book in maybe 2 years, recalling from memory.
No that’s pretty much how it went down from the accounts. The Northern Alliance did have a handful of tanks that they captured from the Talibans and I believe some artillery. They were mesmerized when the CIA and SF had them watch through binoculars while the Americans called in super accurate airstrikes. The Northern Alliance people thought it was like magic.
Can’t remember where I read it but word was they would get an orbiting B52 to drop a JDAM on some Taliban and surviving Taliban would run jump into the crater because “lighting” won’t strike twice same place. Then here comes another JDAM special delivery. ![]()

Just like Lone Survivor I’m sure there are parts where the screenplay takes creative license from the book. As others have said let’s hope it’s not outrageous and hurts the credibility of the actual event.
