My Story:
I have a 10.5" LWRCI M16 upper (piston, obviously) with a Magpul UBR stock, Geisselle SSF trigger and run a Surefire 556K can on the system. When I first started using the upper, SA worked flawlessly, but FA was complicated by light primer strikes. This was fixed with an H3 buffer and Wolff 2x power buffer spring. The rate of fire is an issue with the shorty upper - It’s pretty zippy without the suppressor, and crazy fast with the can installed due to the back pressure.
Now I’m looking to slow the weapon’s cyclic rate down a bit. I’ve searched the net and come across a few ‘fixes’ out there - AAC’s cyclic rate reducer (spring and special buffer - for sale at Brownell’s), an MGI product (special buffer) and read about the Ferfranz Rate Reduction System (but never seen one for sale). Also seen the VLTOR A5 system, but that requires special stock and/or buffer tube.
Does anyone have any experience with these products or other suggestions to help slow down my ROF?
I would not use the MGI, that’s me. The A5 would be the best bet. You don’t need a special stock, simply replace the tube with the A5 tube and then you use their buffer and a rifle spring.
I have owned both POF and LWRC piston “shorty uppers”. Both ran like buzz saws on full auto. I tried seveal different rate reducer buffers including the AAC to get them to a managable rate of fire. The buffers did help reduce the cycle rate but not enough. No matter what I tried both uppers ran too fast for my taste so I sold them. I assumed after my limited test that it was a “piston” issue. I only run DI uppers now and am very happy with the reliability and rate of fire.
I thought to post a follow-up after trying several things. My trial and error attempts revolved around changing the buffer and action spring.
After trying the Mil-Spec, Wolff extra power and MGI 2x springs along with the H2, H3 and MGI rate reducing buffer, the best combo I found is the MGI 2x action spring and the MGI rate reducing buffer.
This combo was costly, but reduced the rate of my 10.5" LWRCI upper (in unsuppressed, automatic fire) to a very manageable rate of rife (almost reminded me of a full auto, full-size, UZI). This combo was still fast with the suppressor attached, but much better than the other combination of action springs / buffers.
