I went to the range today sighting in my AR’s with different sight combo’s. While on the 200 yard range sighting in my bull barrelled AR I thought I would try the 10.5". I wasn’t sure it would hit paper at 200. I was shooting at sheets of typing paper with 2" orange bulls.
Now I’m not going to tell you I shot great groups with the 10.5" but I did hit paper every time with irons. It is center mass accurate. While it may not have the velocity to fragment, I know it will hit that far out.
I was pretty happy about it.
I have taken 10.5 guns out to 500 meters and had no problem consistently dropping torso sized targets from a mag-rest prone.
This was my first time shooting at 200 yards with anything. They recently opened a 200 yard state range:D
Getting hits with a 10.5 shouldn’t be an issue.
Penetration and fragmentation is a different story.
200 and 300 yard hits on torso-sized steel are no problem with my 10.5" gun with irons or an unmagnified Aimpoint from a supported position or prone. I am typically limited to a 500 yard range, and I can’t really say there is much difference between a 16" carbine and the 10.5" one at those ranges in terms of being able to make hits. The 10.5" falls off a little faster beyond 300 or so, but otherwise there is no realistic difference.
No 5.56mm going to reliably fragment past 200 yards in any case (more like 100 in the case of the 10.5") so there’s no point in worrying about that.
The trajectory on the shorter guns just isn’t as flat. They should shoot about as well.
I shot my BCM 11.5" with an Aimpoint T1 and a Magnifier in at a recent match. Hitting the targets wasn’t as big of a problem as the wind. The loss in velocity, really makes a huge difference when you are shooting in windy conditions.
Most accurate gun I ever had was a 10.5 inch HK416. You hear a lot of internet BS about short barrels, pistons guns, etc. Short fat hammerforged barrels are accurate as hell let me tell you.
 You gotta get out more…
the first and last things the bullet touches in the barrel- the leade and the crown- really determine how well a barrel shoots, and this will hold true at 7.5 or 26".
i have a 10.65" i chopped out of an LMT 14.5… accuracy was boringly unaffected. it grouped 1.5ishMOA with xm193 and a 2MOA dot before, and groups 1.5ishMOA with xm193 and a 2MOA dot now at 3.85" shorter.
Thats good, I was worried about getting hits with my up coming SBR.
…
Why is it doin that? Sorry
exactly, sbrs are just as accurate as longer bbls
I agree. Problem is the 200 yard range in this area is 45 miles away. And I believe this is the first year for it.
I had a hoot shooting my Bull barrelled AR at 200:D
The main difference is velocity. You simply have to know where your rifle shoots at a given distance and given velocity. Most 10, 16, 20, etc will hold true to their POI as long as your ammo stays the same.
Matt
Last time at the pop-up range at Camp Perry I shot from prone with a 11.5" SBR and an Eotech. Targets ranged from 50 to 300m. Scored 38/40 and 40/40. Some folks were surprised, but the short barrel didn’t seem to be much of a disadvantage.
Didnt Noveske say his stainless 10.5 inch barrel was his most accurate barrels consistantly?
I built a 7.5" with a Rainier Ultra Match 1/8 today. I’ll try that one at 200 yards just to see.![]()
