1-4 variable versus Aimpoint + 3X

I’m interested in setting up one of my rifles with some magnification and am considering a 1-4 variable scope, or an Aimpoint with the 3x magnifer set up. Anybody have an approximate weight of say an ML3 in a Larue mount + the Aimpoint 3X in a Laure mount? I would really like the 2 moa dot so that is why I wouldn’t go with the mini (and I know the mini is more like a 3.5 moa) Also, looking for an approximate weight of a Trijicon Accupoint 1-4 in a Larue mount. Would one set up be significantly lighter than another?

I just made the switch from a RDS and magnifier to a 1-4 scope. According to manufacturer specs, I saved 2 to 4 ounces. I can’t really feel much difference.

Performance wise, I am very happy with the switch.

Don’t be deceived by the 4 MOA dot. Once you learn to run it you can shoot tight groups using the edges. I was shooting .60/.75 groups at 100 with a T1 3X setup this weekend, from the prone using a Harris on my MRP with 90gr SS 6.8. Once you learn the edges its as easy as any optic out there in my book. YMMV… I seem to shoot better groups with it than I do with my CQT.

An ML3 in a larue mount is maybe 10-11 ozs and the Aimpoint magnifier is I think 7ozs without the larue mount.

Whatever you choose make sure you look througn the TRIJICON TR24 1-4X scopes before you decide on something else. IMHO from 5 to about 350yds they are are hard to beat for the money.

check out the Elcan SpectreDR, it will weigh in a little heavier
(21 ounces) than an Aimpoint comp ml3 (9.5 ounces) and Aimpoint 3x mag (7.1 ounces) and mounts (2 ounces) but frees up alot of rail space and has a quick flip switch for 1x to 4x. not to mention, they are built like a tank and can take any kind of abuse you can throw at it. you can pick one up for about $1300, and keep in mind that you don’t need to purchase mounts or risers.

Got to get about 80 rounds down range today with the trijicon and was extremely happy with it. I found it was much quicker to pick up than my red dot as the sun was low, bright, and directly behind me. The red dot was quick, but the TRG was quicker. I tried it strong side and weak side, moving and standing. I tried it with a good cheek weld and as far back as I could go and could not miss a silhouette inside of 10 yards. I tried it with no cheek weld and still could not miss. I think for CQB it will get the job done.

Outside of 25 yards, I prefer it magnified versus 1X. I did have a little trouble at first at 50 yards, support side, but that is me as I can’t close my dominant eye.

I am not missing my RDS and mag by any means.
