1-4 variable optic on AR with fixed front sight?

Been thinking about adding a Leupold VX-R Patrol to my AR with a fixed fsb. Any downsides other then the weight? I guess it’s between that and a ACOG TA33.

I used the Burris AR-P.E.P.R. mount with a Nikon M-223 1-4X20 and I like it a lot. The FSB doesn’t get in the way… You can see it, but no issues… I would love to see the VX-R Patrol… Ron

“Probably” not, unless you mount it lower than standard - and assuming you look at the target and not the blurr/shadow of the FS. It does bother some people a lot, however. I run a 1-4 PST on one, with no issues (to me), even at 1X. The front sight is most visible at 1X, btw. But unlike most, I prefer Aimpoints at absolute co-witness - so grain of salt and all that.

I use a Short Dot in a Larue SPR-E mount, and at 1x, I do not notice the FSB any more than I do on my AP equipped carbines.

On 4x I do not notice it at all, there is a blur there, but unless I think about it, I just tune it out.

I would say if the FSB doesn’t bother you with a red dot, it should not be a problem with a variable power optic.

It may depend on the height of your glass. If I pop up the front sight it is very distracting and blocks part of the view. Now, I am one of those shooters who doesn’t like having irons up unless I’m using them. I can deal with it when I have to… but prefer everything folded down.

On my 1-6 optic, the X300 is noticeable if I think about it, but most of the time it doesn’t register. If I put up the front sight though… it’s like a blurry finger being held in front of my optic.

I find it unbearable at 1x.

The taller larue mount works pretty good for that.

thanks for all the feedback!

My friend has the var x r 1-4 or whatever the low end magnification one is. It’s not the patrol model though. He has a front sight post, and you do sort of notice it at the lowest power but up around 3 and 4 power you don’t.

In theory, wouldn’t the shadow also be less noticeable on a middy than on a carbine, and less on a rifle length than mid?

Here is mine on a circle firedot. Picture is on 1.25 power. I have the scope in a LT104. I’m so use to absolute co-witness with a red dot that the shadow doesn’t bother me. David
