Were I in chare of Indian Affairs it'd be a pivot from "handouts" to the Habitat for Humanity model of "we'll help but you gotta do some of the work yourself."
That was the part that sorta mystified me. Some of them were the most hard working people you'd ever meet. They had vehicles that were sometimes 20 years old in good working order. I watched one guy build a ranch style wooden post fence around his property that was pretty close to 100 yards in length by himself. But they won't clean the floor of a community center where there kids go to learn things.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

    Dude that's Cultural.
I've seen it and yeah it's weird, but who's lower than the guy that sweeps the dust from your shoes?

If I was a parent, I'd volunteer to mop that floor so my kids had a clean place to do things.

Brother, I understand, but we aint Indians.
Also; you can't say this X, is a trait of Culture Y, because cultures go a lot deeper than that. At it's core if someone asks you about your "Culture" what they are going to get is a summary of your childhood understanding of how, where and with what values you were raised.
If someone who does janitorial work is looked down upon as the lowest of your society, the floors always going to need sweeping where you live.

I have a buddy that went in to the Military, retired and worked for GD. Homeboy struck gold as far as he was concerned. Married a German Girl, traveled the World nice six figure salary.
Looked like John Redcorn, spoke like Dale Dribble and lived inside a GQ Photoshoot.

I agree. Most Tribal members I arrested were totally cooperative, wouldn’t even try to escape when I gave them the opportunity (& no, I wouldn’t have hurt them). The only TM that ever resisted was a DUI that was really upset because the dirtbag that murdered his mother and dismembered her was released from prison that day. I put all that in the case report and the Court took that into consideration.

I once saw a TM funeral where the deceased was carried in the back of a pickup truck during the funeral procession. I thought that was pretty “low rent” until a friend explained they didn’t want the spirit trapped in the back of a hearse. That made total sense to me. It’s all about educating us non-TM’s. I have no problem respecting other people’s beliefs.
