I have several friends with XD's. While I tried very hard to like them, I could not.

1) My hand is very large and the grip is very small. I tried, and tried, and tried but could not find any thumbs forward grip variation that would work with my hand and the gun. I can pull it off fine with smaller guns such as the m&p 9c and glock 19, so its the geometry of the gun rather than the size. The only way I could shoot it was with a weaver, and even then it was unpleasant to shoot.

2) XD's have excessive recoil for their caliber in my hand, even when comparing apples to apples with the same grip in competing guns.

3) The trigger is mushy, the reset is long, and the 'trigger safety' bothers my finger a lot more than the glock. Between the lousy purchase I get on the grip, the lousy trigger, and the high recoil it is extremely slow shooting.

4) The ones I have shot have not impressed me with their accuracy.

5) The reports from trainers and range masters about frequent failures, the lack of parts, and the failure of any significant adoption by law enforcement are three huge red flags.

Of all the guns that get mainstream discussion on this board, the XD is about the last one I would personally want.

I grew up shooting a 1911 (which feels better than any semi handgun I've ever fired, including my XD), but I opted for the higher mag capactiy of the XD and the ergonomics were more in line with what I was used to (compared to the Glock).

I've fired several Glocks over the years, and their accuracy is good. I especially liked the ported .40 cal I shot. But, I am a big fan of muscle memory. Every time I grab a Glock and throw it up fast on a target, I am aiming at the tree tops (after getting used to a 1911 grip angle). I figured that in a life or death situation (for me) that extra 1/5 of a second I spend readjusting my point of aim with a Glock could make all the difference.

Giving the devil his due, I never had a malfunction with a Glock. The grip angle would force me to unlearn a lot.
