John Kiriakou, CIA officer who captured Abu Zubaydah and others

John Kiriakou is an interesting guy. Best known for capturing Abu Zubaydah, but did time in prison for exposing the "enhanced interrogation" practices used post 9/11, which he didn't agree with and refused to be part of when approached. This was a good interview I thought. Here's a clip from it. Might check out one of his books:

On going to prison. Is he talking about Sammy "The Bull" Gravano in that clip?

I was a Federal employee. We had to do annual training and one of those modules was "Whistle-blower protection". Funny (not) how loose those "protections" are.

Caveat: I have ZERO qualms with what they did to those muzzy terrorist POS, just making an observation based on the general use of whistle-blower "protections" (or lack thereof), like the IRS and FBLie whistle-blowers of more recent times. Overt retaliation against them may have been stymied, or at least put on the down-low, but as far as their careers are concerned the fat lady ain't sung yet.

As someone still taking that required annual training, the so-called "protections" are a complete joke. Everyone knows that if you blow the whistle, you WILL be retaliated against. You WILL lose your livelihood and your reputation. IF you have enough money to fight it, these laws may afford you some compensation on the back end. That's it.

Perhaps there's slightly improved protections then there was a decade ago or so, but there's a reason most whistles blowers try virtually all other possible routes to fix it before going the route of the whistle blower.

The law has been updated several times, most recently with the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act of 2012 (WPEA). They're still not worth spit at preventing retaliation by senior executives within the federal government. There have been plenty of federal employees substantially retaliated against since 2012, including within my own department & agency. Everyone who works under the "protection" of these laws knows this. It's not even a secret.
