I actually like GD here. It seems whenever something big is happening in the world someone here has legit info about it. The core group of guys that regularly frequent GD have a lot of knowledge over a wide array of topics.

No dude is going to get shot in the chest at 300 yards and look down and say "What is that, a 3 MOA group?"

They also seem to have access to better info than a lot of news feeds and are typically pretty accurate at assessing the actual story if / when it conflicts with reported events. And just as important, even though I disagree with a great many folks REGULARLY, I wouldn't even bother having the discussion anywhere else.

These days you are actually more likely to be right to believe the exact opposite of what an MSM headline is rather than believing the headline itself, the level of media manipulation thats been going since 2016 ramped up exponentially in 2020 is at the whole new level in 2024. This whole information warfare/5th gen warfare being waged against the US populace through the media is exactly why having knee jerk Top Headline reactions to events is generally a bad thing.

Otherwise this place is no different than Facebook, Twitter or TikTok

Apologies if my comment seemed abrasive, I was just reacting in kind tonally to what you said earlier which I felt was implying my OP was part of a "loud handful of complainers" that should be ignored.

I think regardless of the source, at best you get half the story.

Something happens and CNN reports the part that makes them look good and Fox reports the part that makes them look good. If there is no way to present "half of the story" in a favorable light, they simply ignore it. But again it's all editorialized news in the end, it's what a commentator thinks or believes about the story that determines how it gets presented. Facts have become irrelevant.

Is it the broadcasters, or is it the producers? For the most part the broadcasters are reading what's on the screen in front of them. I do totally agree that over the past 30 years or so the broadcasters are like jazz musicians and will riff off what's on the screen and inject their opinion or bias.

I am a big fan of CNN. And Fox. And NPR. And National Review. If you read or listen to a variety of sources across the spectrum you can get an idea for what the actual story is and critically think through what you need to actually know. My big issue is people will stick to one or two sources that are in line with their own way of thinking to lead to bias confirmation, and that becomes their only truth.

    It's everyone.

I can't think of a single news source that doesn't have a preferred editorial bias. Even if it's simply a case of ignoring stories that don't support their preference and going far out of their way to find ones that do.

The actual news personalities are just talking heads who were hired because they can effectively transmit that preferred bias in an effective manner.

I used to be the "listen to both sides, the truth is usually found in the overlap" kind of person, but I just don't have time for the dog and pony show any more.

While I cannot vouch for it as I don't look there, but supposedly Al Jazeera (of all damn places) is supposed to be pretty unbiased for issues that don't involve the Middle East. Anyone else heard that?

LOL. Never. BBC used to be the closest thing to "just the news" but that hasn't been the case for probably 15 years.
