Not that it's not an issue or anything...but back in the early 90s we had our credit rating cut down to AA up here in Canada.

Obviously it wasn't ideal, but we've been back at AAA for a few years now having put more effort into balancing our federal budgets since about 1995 or so.

So at the least, I can say from experience that living in a country without a triple A credit score is not automatically a major concern. I'm sure if you get people in who can take control of the US deficits, you'll find your credit restored.

Not to take away from the "man the battle stations" feel of the thread or anything...just saying, I have been through it in my country and it didn't end up being that big of a deal. It was just an impetus to get our finances on track, and, thankfully, that was done, and only a few years later, we now have one of the strongest economies in the world. And, in fact, have been pretty unscathed by the worldwide credit problems of the last three years.

So it can be done, as long as there is the political will. The problem in the US at the moment is that no one party has enough power to act decisively. Nobody has the political stomach for anything, because the margins of victory and defeat are razor thin.

Anyway, as long as you can get control of your federal budgets, it's a problematic, but not necessarily disastrous, situation, as evidenced by my own country's slide into credit trouble, and subsequent climb back out.
Full disclosure: I'm the editor of Calibre Magazine, which is Canada's gun magazine. In the past I've done consulting work for different manufacturers and OEM suppliers, but not currently. M4C's disclosure policy doesn't seem to cover me but we do have advertisers, although I don't handle that side of things and in general I do not know who is paying us at any given time.

I have to believe that the reason they (the "upper level post count 'cool' guys") ridicule the "conspiratorial thinking" is because they want to keep the site on track (meaning discussing guns/gear/training) and not let it turn into a conspiracy/tin foil/preppers anonymous site. I would think that those who have been here since the site was founded, and helped create it into what it is, don't have their heads in the sand. Who knows, I may be wrong though...

I have personally not heard any ridiculing. You may very well be right Ironman. But I would think if that were the case there would be polite discouragement of the topics rather than ridicule. Ridiculing is usually when a polar opposite position is taken and you think someone is nuts. Who knows, as I've said I haven't encouontered any. But I will say that just because someone is very knowledgeable, even a SME about a certain subject, it does not automatically make them a SME on other subject matter. So until the ridiculing comes our way they should get the benefit of the doubt. If it comes our way..."the Facts" are our friend.

Well I was just using the same descriptive word that mtneer used. I would agree that I haven't really experienced "ridiculing", but I do get the sense that certain people tend to turn their nose up at people who get into guns for "shtf" purposes. Most of the guys who do that have/do use guns for a living, so I think it is more a "professional snobbery" so to speak. I would bet it is a very small percentage who don't believe that something along the "shtf" scenario "COULD" happen.

Conspiratorial thinking gets ridiculed because many of us have spent years living in middle-eastern war zones. My life seems is a constant SHTF scenario because you never know when someone may take a shot at you or blow you up. We see the "other side" of living.
ETA: Many of us are realists.

Our government cannot "create" one job without spending 400K, how do you suppose they are going to round everyone into camps and initiate the new world order silliness?
I don't understand how the govt. can be so inept at everything they do and yet people think there are evil masterminds potting behind the scenes.

The sad part is, people will realize how inept our government is when S does HTF and they can't put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

Dave, it's not so much we think the Gov. is plotting behind the scenes as much as , we, like they, think an economic crisis in the United States could lead to massive civil unrest. That's all. BUT....Who among us doubts POTUS would love to be dictator? He has even recently said his life would be easier if he was one. "Never let a crisis go to waste"...remember?

he's got money and people behind him ready to change the country...soros, francis fox-piven, van jones and the list goes on...it's not just him, it's a whole network of people that are organizing to change this country to a marxist/socialist country whether we like it or not...they(meaning right and leftists)have think-tanks that think this shit up and what the responses will be...why do people insist that this isn't gonna happen??? i hope that i am wrong and you can laugh it off later!!! but do i think that is gonna happen??? NO...our freedom, liberty and the great life that we have in this country that we have served in the armed services is under fire...and still people want to bury their heads in the internet, books, tv, hobbies and vacations they can't afford just to play charades...nothing to see here people, nothing to see...

I disagree. The current POTUS is not trying to be a dictator. I would point you to the Unitary Executive Theory.

As for the dictator quote.. you're listening to the spin. here is the transcript of the relevant quote.

"POTUS: Believe me, and… and, and, and believe me right now dealing with congress...the idea...
Crowd erupts saying: "Yes You Can! Yes You Can!"
    (pause for crowd)
Crowd gets even louder: "Yes You Can! Yes You Can!"
POTUS: But, but, but believe me...uh...believe me the idea of doing things on my own are very tempting.
POTUS: I promise you, not just on immigration reform... But that's not how...that's not how our system works... that's not how our democracy functions."

Apparently, sarcasm IS dead. If you watch the actual speech on video, the joking tone in the President's voice is plainly obvious. So, NO, President Obama is not trying to be a dictator. I heard the same charges from the left when Bush was in office. "He's trying to take over... The sky is falling... etc." The present Commander in Chief is a natural born, American citizen, duly elected by the States and the Electoral College (as opposed to a 5-4 vote in the Supreme Court.) Anyone who believes the contrary is in need of a real tin-foil-hat. You don't have to agree with the policies of certain politicians but trying to undercut the other side's argument by simply dismissing them as "un-American," is intellectually dishonest.

Who wouldn't love to be dictator? Seriously? Who doesn't want to kill someone from time to time? Does that mean he'll seek it out? If you hate Obama so much why don't you do something about it?

You're assuming that people lack self restraint and don't care about the good of others. That's what makes us different than animals. Just because we'd like to have sex with a beautiful person we just met doesn't mean we'll rape them on the spot.
