“Those who do not view armed self defense as a basic human right, ignore the mass graves of those who died on their knees at the hands of tyrants.”
Went old school yesterday. Great vintage Pierce crono. I had it dated years back but cant remember the exact year, but I'm pretty sure it was late 30's early 40's... Nothing fancy but still a great old watch that I make time to wear a few times a year.
I wear an Oris TT1. It's classy without being obscenely expensive.
Nothing man-portable is guaranteed to end a fight.
Little bit off topic, but my uncle sent me this pocket watch shortly after my son was born, saying it belonged to my great-grandfather and that, shortly before she died, my grandmother asked that it be given to me. When he's old enough I'll give it to my son. It still runs. There's something special about that connection as I'm sure this watch was an important part of my great grandfather's daily life for many, many years. Much different than nowadays where we buy and discard things at a whim:

Thoughts on Marathon watches?
I need a new watch. No one will buy me one that's worth a shit, so I'm thinking of buying myself one for Christmas in a few months.
In a few years I'd love to pick up an Omega Planet Ocean or Speedmaster but until then I'd like a nice, accurate, and durable Stainless Steel watch to wear. I'm not overly hard on watches I don't think but have killed more than a few in the last couple of years with broken bands, lugs, busted crystals, etc. None were worth enough to justify repairing. I am currently wearing my G Shock around the office, and while it's fine for the range, camping, and household chores; it's frankly embarrassing to wear with a suit.
Here's where the Marathons come in (and in particular the GSAR). They SEEM to be well made, durable, and with a Stainless bracelet I think dressy enough to go from jeans to a suit. This would be my stop gap until I can swing the Omega.
What is everyone's experience with these? Worth the $$$? I appreciate anything you can share.
Marathons are HEAVY!!!! Nice watch but HEAVY.
Find you a Seiko SKX007 or 009 while you save your dough for the Omega.
Riots are like sports, it's better to watch it on TV at home.
As stated below, the GSAR is pretty big, heavy and 900ish
shipped by the time you get the steel band. You are nearly 1/2 way to a clean used Omega at that price.
I concur re getting a nice steel banded Seiko if an automatic is driving the train. Citizen has a number of steel banded watches that are quite attractive as well, though they are not a true automatic. Indeed, Cosctco typically has a Citizen Chrono under 250 all day long.
As someone who bought and sold traded a number of $50-$350 watches before finallly just sucking it up, saving, and selling a few things, to get a nice watch (Omega Seamaster GMT) , get something for 200ish or less, save the dif and put it toward the Omega your really want.
Finally, if you do a google search for watch forums, there are any number of them populated by guys like us who are into watches. They often sell their watches searching for their "grail" as we switch out from Glock to a 1911 to an MP to an HK, in the never ending quest for "the" gun.
In short, their is a vigorious market for quality used watches that can routinely be had between 30% and 70% off of retail.
I had a Stainless Quartz Seiko Diver that I inherited from my stepdad when he passed away. It took some bumps and bruises but nothing over the top. The bracelet finally crapped out though and when it gave way and crashed to the deck it stopped running. The end links were like part of the case and when I couldn't find a band locally I sent it back to Seiko for repair. The model was discontinued and parts were unavailable. They told me it was unrepairable.
It was a nice watch and I was dissapointed. I wouldn't mind another Seiko. I looked at the SKX007 and 009 and they looked OK. I liked the 007 better. They just don't wow me though. Any other models I should look at (also I prefer a stainless bracelet). I'd also entertain other makes. That's why I came here to ask.
Thanks!
Seiko Orange monster, great watch with a great reputation. I will wear this until i can fork enough cash for an Omega, although the marathon has intrigued me.
This watch has some of the best lume too!

He's a Seiko specialist and does great work. He's done better work than the factory for me (and probably many others). He may have parts (or access to parts) that the factory does not.
