    USC into UMP ish

I dig the USC. I like the idea of a light semi auto .45 ACP.
We cannot have SBR's in michigan
Also in the state of michigan a Folding stocked rifle needsto be registered as a pistol if it is under a magic number of inches.. slips my mind at this time i think its 26"

A local shop that takes good care of me has a USC on teh shelf. Id be able to get it for a fair price. however i hate the stock and 10 rd cap.

Im trying to decern if i can buy the carbine from my local shop and have it sent out to be made into a long bbl UMP? OR if i can order the kit and do it my self.. Or if i have to buy it as a Long bbl UMP from a dealer.

my post is here. reference potentialy changing a rifle into a pistol which im clear is a no go.

    If its wrong please move

    THanks

Per ATF no rifle can become a pistol.

And your local law is not in compliance with ATF. Once you stock a pistol, it IS a rifle and if the barrel is shorter than 16" it is a SBR. So it sounds like any USC conversion simply won't be possible.

You could build it into a long barrel UMP, but it will be classified as a rifle and can never be classified as a pistol in order to allow a folding stock per your state law.

Ill look into the state end more..

However my Lancaster AK is a folder and registered as a pistol... per MI law.
Same is true with underfolders/ the para Ar 15/ and even the Beretta Storm as it is under length when the spacer is remved

    (e) “Pistol” means a loaded or unloaded firearm that is 30 inches or less in length, or a loaded or unloaded firearm that by its
construction and appearance conceals it as a firearm.

In that case you might be in luck. I had to do conversions to both HK rifles (USC & SL8) in order for them to be correct.

Mine are SBRs but you can essentially do the same UMP conversion and leave the 16" barrel intact. And it will actually be to your advantage since foreign factory barrels are hard to come by these days.

Contact Tactical Excellence about your conversion needs.

They can do exactly what you are looking for.

Stay away from Top Notch conversion parts. I'm also not crazy about HDPS parts.

What he is refering to is, what we call a michigan pistol, MI has a law that says all rifles with an OAL between 26 and 30 must be registered as a pistol, it does not make the weapon a pistol, it is just a round about way to get the weapon into the Michigan State Police registry system.

No change in the Federal definition of of rifle or pistol occurs.

On the up side, it does allow us to carry these rifles that are registered as a pistol in our vehicles or on our person as MI considers them pistols for the purposes of our CPL's.

So a USC/UMP conversion must retain the 16 inch USC barrel, I have one and I just sent the paperwork to MSP and no issue. MI only allows SBR/SBS if they are CR.

That said legislation is in the works to align this discrepancy with Fed law.

Also, Tactical Exellence is out of the USC/UMP conversion biz, HDPS is the only game in town now.

    Roy-
You can buy a USC and convert it. You may do the conversion yourself or send it out. You must retain the USC 16in barrel. When your conversion is done you need to either get a pistol purchase permit or fill out the RI-60 if you have a CPL, with you as both the seller and buyer and then return the paperwork to your local PD/SO. It's really no issue. I have done this conversion in MI and I have a converted USC/UMP, although I am selling it next week. PM me if you have any further questions.

    Gotcha, thanks.

Sad that TE is out of the biz, glad I got mine done when I did.

Interesting to see your comments on TE and HDPS. By the time I had gathered the parts and money for a TE conversion they quit the business. I've been happy with my HDPS work and it compared favorably to a real UMP.

    Spooky
