If you’re starting a new build from scratch the locating pin is not a problem, as you can buy an upper receiver from the following:

    Zev
    https://www.zevtechnologies.com/forged_upper_ar15

    Mega
    https://www.zevtechnologies.com/mega...upper-receiver

    SOLGW
    https://www.primaryarms.com/solgw-st...upper-receiver

    Icon Defense
    https://www.icondefense.com/product/...iver-stripped/

    Rainier Arms
    https://www.rainierarms.com/rainier-...receiver-gen2/

    Expo Arms
    https://www.primaryarms.com/expo-arm...upper-receiver

    Hodge Defense
    https://www.bigtexordnance.com/produ...aluminum-black

And if you can find one, a Noveske forged upper.

One thing I don't love about the wedge lock design is that the wedge lock assembly gets all boogered up when removing it due to the screw and the wedge pieces galling. See here.

Can you put some grease on that or something?

There actually was grease on it, but not a ton and I wiped most of it off before taking those pictures. On the replacement wedge assembly I swapped in I applied Aeroshell A LOT more liberally doing my best to keep it out of the torx head. I did a test removal and the results were not that much better, unfortunately. I think it's just a byproduct of the design relying on the screw head to drive the wedge pieces in and out of position. Definitely liberally apply a high pressure grease to the top and bottom of the screw head if you ever plan to remove the rail.

I mentioned "minor" modification earlier, I meant something like using emory cloth on the pin if it's a little tight. If someone has a receiver with no hole in it, just get a rail with anti-rotation tabs. I wouldn't say one way is better than the other, a steel pin or aluminum tabs.
I must have missed that part. Thanks for clarifying.

I also didn't realize all those lowers HammerMan posted below have the holes. I guess I need to get out more. But I don't typically step too distant from the formula I have that works well.

Personally I think the SOLGW M89 drive lock is a better solution, as it avoids the issues with the wedge mechanism mentioned by RennBaer. The Hodge Defense S-Lock is very similar, but more difficult to find.

You are right, those probably are better rails. I should have mentioned in this thread, it's discussed in another thread. I have a Noveske branded Vltor mur upper receiver. It can't be used with anti-rotation tabs. It's not the same as the more common Vltor mur 1A. That why I had to choose a rail that uses a pin for anti-rotarion.

I used an SMOS billet upper with my Spine lock, I just filed the anti rotation tabs until they fit.

Got the rail yesterday and built the upper. It fit good and I like the design of that rail. I did use a little bit longer anti-rotation pin than the one that came with the rail. The hole in the receiver is quite a bit deeper than the hole in the receiver. That Noveske recon barrel is heavy. Supposedly they are really accurate barrels from what I hear.

The locating pin can be removed. Or Adco can drill uppers for them.
