I only handled one in the store but the thing that struck me (and bothered me) was the stock seemed flimsy. I am old enough to remember the Ram-Line Min-14 and 10/22 stocks and that is what it felt like to me. I'm not convinced the toe of the stock would survive a drop onto a hard surface and when it's down to -30 degrees in the winter, I would be especially concerned. That's the main thing that concerned me. Well, that and the "tactical mackerel" feel the forend has.

Compared to the SCAR, the ARX does feel much flimsier. The SCAR's stock has a machined aluminum core and springs that make the lockup tight and eliminate rattle.

Things get cut to hit weight and cost targets. At least the stocks are replaceable w/o specialist tools and only run $65 if you do break one: http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts...prod68641.aspx

Is the SCAR's $150 buttstock 2.3x more durable than the ARX's? I don't know. What I do know is that the ARX provides most of the advantages of the SCAR for ~ 1/2 the price. And if you're left handed it has features like left ejection that pretty much no other design has.

With a couple small tweaks and an earlier release date I think the ARX had the opportunity to become *the* killer rifle, but missed 'em.

Had they integrated the lower pic rail (or just included the add on bit) instead of the GL mount, had the caliber conversion/barrel length kits available (not just for Beretta Mil customers), made the controls a bit less stiff, offered an AR grip swap option on the lower, a spacer for the stock, and included an extended charging handle bit, some QD points, and a nicer trigger, in say, 2012, this thing would have been an amazing market hit.

As is, it missed the hype train and a couple tiny but important frills.

I really like mine though, it's my current go-to. It's relatively light, reliable, reasonably accurate, super modular, etc. Only problems I ever had with it were with garbage winchester white box that ran right in nothing.

That you can get them for $1150 on GB and under $1k through some Botach and Academy sales, its really underrated I feel for all the options it brings, particularly compared with other rifles of the same generation and looking at features. I certainly cant see paying more for a SCAR than an ARX, much less 2.5-3x as much.

With a two year break from the ARX...I found myself back into it. Missed the platform...not the most accurate per say...but it gets the job done well for me.

So the rifle doesn't have any steel inserts where the BCG ride on? That's something of a concern.. I wonder how long the receiver is going to last with a steel BCG riding on plastic.

Nope, no steel, It's plastic all the way.

What has better long term wear resistance: fiberfilled ordnance plastic or anodized aluminum?

I don't know the answer to that one.
