The extension is compatible. The A5 system, spring and buffer, are not.

The "system" isn't compatible (system consisting of A5 RE, A5/M16 rifle spring, and longer A5 buffer).

The A5 receiver extension IS compatible assuming the rest of the buffer system components you use are AR-10 pattern.

You can use an AR-10 buffer system on LR308 receivers.

I just so happen to have an extra A5 extension laying around, I understand about using the A5/rifle spring; so THIS is what I would need, in addition to an H3 buffer?

Good stuff guys - as I said hoping to get this comprehensive thread that perhaps results in someone being able to build a current comprehensive compatibility chart.
Looks like we're well on our way.
    Here's a tidbit I found - chart and all.

That chart has MANY errors... I would avoid it. For example, Aero Precision and Sig 716 uppers are LR308 pattern, NOT AR-10.

It also doesn't distinguish between AR-10A and AR-10B (classic AR-10 pattern).

As said above, that chart has errors. First line about aero is wrong

"Works with standard DPMS 308 components and magazines"

Ha... the further I read the more it becomes. Armalite AR10 (original) does NOT use SR25 components.

Wow lol. Never look at that chart again its very very incorrect. lol

Thanks - good to know - one more reason to do this.

Still hoping someone can give me a bit of input on the BCG - is there a particular one that should be considered? - or will any work with the given upper/barrel set-up.
Also my preference goes to a Carpenter 158 bolt, many are listed with 9310, not convinced of that being all that great.

Does anyone have experience running a rifle RE set-up, and would there be advantages to that?, comparable to doing this on the AR15.

I have a fixed MOE rifle stock on my MaTen. I wasn't getting good enough sight picture with my MOE collapsible with my Bushnell Elite Tactical ERS. The eyebox is pretty small on that scope and I needed the extra length. I actually still had to add the largest PRS butt pad to give even more length. That, and I never ever collapsed the stock. But if one were to end up with a monolithic set up then that wouldn't be an issue since you could just move the scope forward. I think a real common stock for AR308s is the PRS. I think a lot of guys when they go down this road they are going for a precision gun and the PRS will give much more versatility with their optic setup than some collapsible options. I have an AR10 PRS (the comb riser is shorter than the AR15) and I took it off without ever firing a round. It made the assembled lower (took it off before I even had the barrel) so heavy that I decided it wasn't for me. I wasn't looking for a 20 pound gun lol.

    As to your BCG question:
The BCM gunfighter charging handle is compatible with both AR10 and AR308 pattern carriers. So that leads me to believe that their length is very similar if not identical. However their bolts are different. So you need to match your bolt to your barrel.

Armalite bolts are made from 8620.

8620 is obviously not milspec and I guess has had problems. (I have an Armalite BCG with my Noveske barrel in my MaTen)

DPMS brand bolts are made of Carpenter 158 with the carrier being made of 8620 (see specs in link below)

Rainier has these also, and I think they're a site sponsor so shop there. Ok looking at Rainier... they're in the middle of a site upgrade and my account seems to be gone and their site seems to be in flux... so.... maybe not there, or at least not today.

What's interesting is that JP sells low mass BCGs that are 9310 for somewhere around $450. JP doesn't really sell crap, but if they're wanting to move some products and C158 is unavailable, I could only imagine that they would go with the next best thing. But it is only just that, and not the actual spec.

Just made it through this entire thread. Thanks to all of your contributions. Like many of the others I bit on the AP M5 set. I also bit on a good deal for a 762 CMR. After reading I'm kind of wishing I hadn't bought either. TehLlama has me praying for an option from one of our trusted manufacturers, and LRRPF52 has me applying a field dressing to my foot.

I am more recently intrigued by Colt's M.A.R.C. 901, specifically the AR901-16S which appears to have a removable forend. However, I am afraid of more proprietary dysfunction. Has anyone else seen or heard anything about this model? Can you swap the barrel or handguard?
