I thought LAV didn't build custom pistols anymore?
I thought LAV didn't build custom pistols anymore?
We miss you, AC.
We miss you, ToddG.
For the most part that is correct, but you also have many on the list who are years out on builds and in that amount of time LAV very well might decide to take on a few builds as time permits...
Every once in a while he sneaks one out though...
Pete Single did the checkering for LAV for those who haven't seen his work. I'll simply say that it is impeccable!
Joe Barnsfather (Mr. Smith, here on the forum) of Superior Firearms in Louisville deserves a mention here, as he has proven himself more than competent with original formula and double-stack 1911s.
Barnsfather's no-nonsense transformation of an STI Lawman (done for about the same price as a stripped CQB) ...
Joe isn't the guy I would go to for fancy scrollwork, museum-grade aesthetics or $6,000+ price tags, but he knows how to build one very solid 1911 on a working man's fare. His approach to timing the gun, in particular, reveals a true mastery of the craft. Another unique attribute is that he aggressively hand files the frame to re-contour the back of the gun for a higher hold (look closely) -- something that very few other smiths will do, if for no other reason, because of the sheer amount of work involved.
AC
d90king is correct - by and large I don't take on new projects but once in awhile I finish one up ( I normally tinker on a 1911 during my pistolsmiths classes) and it goes up for sale or I keep it ; until someone offers me the right amount of $$ and they buy it
I enjoy working on them but I am also glad I don't have to do it full time

I know for fact that one of the smiths at BarSto is Mike Bay. He trained under Armand Swenson, Billy Jack Lashley(Crane) and Irv Stone(owner of BarSto). I've owned two different guns by him and they were Excellent shooters with top notch fitting. I believe Irv Stone also does some of the custom work too. They also have a guy that does the plastic guns, but I can't remember his name and will have to ask Mike. Mike has told me he is very impressed with him and what he's doing.
Kent singletary is customs- accepting work fast turn around good affordable work
Add Kevin Toothman to the list. He's done guns for some of the top competition shooters and his 1911's have to be handled/shot to be appreciated. Of course the prices they fetch reflect that.
